Buying guide · La Maison du Bébé

The best newborn gift is both useful and safe: a comforter suitable for little ones, a rattle, a play mat, baby clothes in size 3 or 6 months, a hooded bath towel or a changing bag. For bigger items, given as a group gift, check the parents’ baby registry first.

Key points
  • Check the age shown on the packaging: the toy must suit the baby’s age.
  • No toys marked “not suitable for children under 36 months”, no small parts and no magnets.
  • In a young baby’s cot: nothing soft (pillow, duvet, cot bumper, large soft toy).
  • Clothes: choose size 3 months, 6 months or larger, with the season in mind.
  • No necklaces, not even amber: risk of strangulation.
  • Large items: give them as a group gift, following the baby registry.

What newborn gift to give? The most useful ideas

The most appreciated gifts are the ones used every day. Here are ideas grouped by use.

Early learning and cuddles

  • A comforter designed for children under 36 months, for example from Doudou et Compagnie or Histoire d’Ours.
  • A light rattle, easy for little hands to grasp.
  • A cot mobile or a night light for the nursery, with the mobile always fixed out of reach.

Bath and care

  • A soft hooded bath towel, useful from the very first baths.
  • A toiletry bag to keep baby’s care products together.

Outings and mealtimes

  • A changing bag: a very useful gift for parents, from Babymoov, Badabulle or Pasito a Pasito.
  • A feeding set, to keep for when baby starts solids.

For the parents

  • A nursing pillow, for comfortable breastfeeding or bottle-feeding. It is for feeding baby, never for putting baby to sleep.

Early learning gifts by age: newborn, 3 months, 6 months

Before 3 months, it is mostly interaction with their parents that stimulates baby. Toys become more important at around 4 months, when baby starts reaching for objects on purpose. The ages below are a guide only: every baby develops at their own pace.

For a newborn

  • A play mat for floor time, always supervised.
  • A cot mobile, fixed out of reach.
  • A baby-safe activity mirror.

For a 3-month-old baby

  • Light rattles, easy to grasp.
  • A teether, chosen according to the age shown.
  • An activity arch over the play mat.

For a 6-month-old baby

  • Soft balls and blocks.
  • Stacking or shape-sorting toys.
  • Touch-and-feel books with different textures.
  • A push-along toy or an activity table.

Find these ideas among our baby activity toys, with brands such as Tiny Love and Chicco.

Clothes and linen: what size to give?

Avoid newborn size: parents often receive a lot of it and baby wears it only briefly. Choose size 3 months, 6 months or larger, with the season in mind.

  • Think ahead to the season: a baby born in July will wear size 6 months around January.
  • Go for practical: bodysuits, pyjamas and cardigans that are easy to put on and wash.
  • Wash before wearing: Anses (the French health and safety agency) advises washing all new clothing that touches the skin before first use, following the label. A tip worth passing on to the parents with your gift.
  • Complete the outfit: hat, booties and mittens.
  • Linen: a blanket or throw is for the stroller or cuddles, not for the cot. For the night, Assurance Maladie recommends a baby sleeping bag suited to baby’s size.

Newborn gift box and group gift: getting organised

Putting together a newborn gift box

A gift box you put together yourself combines several small gifts that go well together. For example:

  • a comforter and a rattle;
  • a bodysuit in size 3 months, a hat and booties;
  • a hooded bath towel and a toiletry bag.

For inspiration, browse our newborn essentials list: it covers everything you need for the first months.

Group gifts

A group gift lets you give a bigger item: stroller, car seat, cot or bouncer. These purchases depend on the parents’ car, home and habits: let them choose the model.

The easiest option is to check the parents’ baby registry: it avoids duplicates. Expecting a baby? Our sample baby registry will help you prepare yours. Delivery across Morocco, or pickup at our showroom in Casablanca (Maârif).

Baby gifts: safety rules to follow

A baby gift must above all be safe. Before you buy, check these points, recommended by the DGCCRF (the French consumer protection authority) and Assurance Maladie.

  • The age shown on the packaging: the toy must suit the baby’s age. Read all the warnings.
  • The “under 36 months” warning: a toy marked “Not suitable for children under 36 months”, or bearing the equivalent pictogram, is a risk for a baby (small parts, long cord, small magnets).
  • Magnets: if swallowed, several magnets can perforate the intestine.
  • CE marking: it means the manufacturer certifies that the toy meets European safety requirements.
  • A well-known retailer: be wary of unusually low prices, a possible sign of counterfeits.
  • Nothing soft in the cot: pillows, duvets, cot bumpers and large soft toys are not recommended in a young baby’s cot.

What not to give a newborn

Some popular gifts raise safety or practical concerns. They are best avoided.

  • Necklaces of any kind, including amber necklaces: the risk of strangulation or choking is real, warns Santé.fr, the French public health information service.
  • Cot bumpers, pillows, duvets, sleep positioners or positioning cushions: France’s Assurance Maladie and the Canadian Paediatric Society advise against them for sleep.
  • A big soft toy in the cot: it can decorate the nursery, but keep it out of the cot.
  • Toys for older children: small parts, cords, magnets.
  • Too many newborn-size clothes: baby will quickly outgrow them.
  • Large baby gear chosen without the parents: a stroller, car seat or cot must suit their daily life.

Frequently asked questions

What gift should you give for a new baby?

A useful, age-appropriate gift: a comforter for under-36-month-olds, a rattle, a play mat, newborn essentials in size 3 or 6 months, a hooded bath towel or a changing bag. For a bigger gift, check the parents’ baby registry.

What is a useful gift for a newborn?

Everyday items: a hooded bath towel, bodysuits and pyjamas in size 3 months, a toiletry bag, a changing bag. For early learning, a cot mobile fixed out of reach or a play mat can be used from the very first weeks, always under supervision.

Should you give newborn-size clothes?

Best avoided: parents often receive plenty and baby wears them only briefly. Choose 3 months, 6 months or larger instead, keeping the season in mind. If the size is wrong, 7-day returns are available.

What gift for a 3-month-old or 6-month-old baby?

At 3 months: lightweight rattles, an age-appropriate teether, an activity arch. Around 6 months: soft balls and blocks, stacking toys, touch-and-feel books. Always check the age shown on the packaging.

What gift can several people give together?

Baby gear the parents have chosen themselves: a stroller, car seat, cot or bouncer, for example. The safest option is to follow their baby registry, which avoids duplicates.

What should you not give a newborn?

Anything that poses a risk: necklaces, even amber ones, toys with small parts or magnets, toys marked “not suitable for children under 36 months”. Also avoid cot bumpers, pillows, duvets and big soft toys for the cot: nothing soft in an infant’s cot.
