What to check before you buy

  • Weight and portability: carry bag, wheels and size once folded.
  • Folding and locking: practise before you set off, and check that every side is securely locked before putting your baby down.
  • The mattress supplied: only use the one provided or recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Accessories: a bassinet, changing table or play arch come with some models only. The product page lists exactly what is included.
  • Usage limit: maximum age, height or weight as stated in the instructions.

Frequently asked questions

Can a travel cot replace a cot?

It is designed first and foremost for travel and occasional use. For everyday sleep, compare it with a cot and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Can you add a thicker mattress to a travel cot?

No, unless the manufacturer offers a specific mattress for that model. A second mattress can create a dangerous gap at the sides and reduce the height of the walls.

Travel cots and playpens: how to choose and use them safely

Zina 2-in-1 bedside cot-crib Mineral Gray Bébé Confort

A travel cot is a folding, portable bed designed for your baby to sleep in when travelling, at the grandparents’ or as a spare bed. A playpen, on the other hand, is a safe play space for awake time; some models, known as playpen cots, do both if their instructions allow it. In every case: baby on their back, nothing in the cot other than the mattress provided by the manufacturer, and a cot assembled according to its instructions.

Frequently asked questions

Travel cot: up to what age?

Usually up to about 3 years, depending on the model. Stop as soon as your child can climb over the sides or reaches the maximum weight stated in the instructions. If the cot has a raised newborn insert, that insert has its own limit, given in the instructions.

Can I add a mattress to a travel cot?

No: follow the manufacturer’s instructions and only use the mattress supplied or the replacement mattress recommended for that model. A second mattress, a mattress topper or a folded duvet can create a dangerous gap against the mesh sides. The sleep surface must stay firm, flat and well fitted.

Travel cot or playpen: what’s the difference?

A travel cot is a folding cot designed for sleep and covered by the EN 716 standard. A playpen is a play space for awake time, covered by the EN 12227 standard up to 15 kg. A playpen cot can do both, but only if its instructions allow it.
