A soft toy is chosen by the age shown on its label, its size and how easy it is to clean: small and light for a baby, larger to decorate an older child’s room. Which soft toy should you choose?

• The cuddly animal: to hug or display in the bedroom, with its height given on the product page (30 to 35 cm in our selection). It suits a child who has reached the stated age, or works as decoration.
• The teddy bear: the classic cuddle companion, here in a small keyring size, the Inès bear.
• The practical model: it adds a function, night light, pacifier holder or pyjama case. It suits bedtime or everyday use; check the power supply of a night light on the product page.
• The soft toy keyring: a small size to clip onto a bag, often given as a gift. It suits older children: check the stated age before giving it to a young child.

For a very young baby, also consider a comforter: flat and soft, it is easy for a small hand to hold.

What to check before you buy

• Stated age: respect the age given on the label or packaging, especially for a baby or for an accessory such as a keyring.
• Finish: for little ones, choose embroidered eyes and no detachable parts; check the seams.
• Size: a small one slips into the changing bag, a large one stays in the bedroom.

Frequently asked questions

Soft toy or comforter: what is the difference?

A comforter is flat and floppy, designed to be held and cuddled by little ones; a soft toy has volume and is more for play and decoration. For a baby, start with a comforter and keep the large model for later.

Which teddy bear makes a good birth gift?

One that the manufacturer states is suitable from birth, soft and easy to wash. A medium size is easier to handle than a very large teddy bear, which will stay decorative.

Can a soft toy stay in baby’s cot?

For little ones, safe sleep recommendations favour a clear cot: place it nearby during sleep. Follow the age stated by the manufacturer and ask your paediatrician for advice.

How do you wash a soft toy?

Follow the label: machine wash, hand wash or surface clean depending on the model, and the manufacturer’s instructions for a night light model. Let it dry completely before giving it back to your child.
