A safety gate marks out the areas where your baby can move around: at the top and bottom of the stairs, at the kitchen door, or along the edge of the bed when your child moves to a bed without bars. Which gate should you choose?

  • Stair gates for stairs and doorways: auto-close, retractable or metal models. Extensions from the same range let you adjust the width, without exceeding the maximum stated in the instructions.
  • Bed rails: they help prevent falls when your child sleeps in a big bed. Choose the length according to the bed; a portable version is available for travelling.

What to check before you buy

  • Width of the opening: measure the stairs or doorway at the widest point, then compare with the adjustment range of the gate and its extensions.
  • Fitting: a pressure-fit gate avoids drilling, but at the top of the stairs, only use a model whose instructions allow that position, often with a screw fitting.
  • Opening: a gate that opens with one hand and closes by itself makes it easier to go through with a child in your arms.
  • The standard: for a stair or door gate, look for the European standard EN 1930 on the product sheet or packaging.
  • For a bed rail: check that it is compatible with your mattress and bed base, as well as the age of use stated.

When should you fit a bed rail?

Usually when your child moves from a cot to a big bed. Respect the age stated by the manufacturer and install it following the instructions.

Do you need a gate at both the top and the bottom of the stairs?

Yes, as soon as your baby moves around on their own. At the top, choose a model whose instructions allow that position.

How do I know which extension I need?

Measure the opening precisely, then subtract the base width of the gate: the difference tells you which extension or extensions to add. Send us your measurements on WhatsApp and we’ll check for you.

Can a gate be fitted without drilling?

Yes, pressure-fit gates are fixed between two walls or in a door frame without drilling; they are suitable for doorways and the bottom of the stairs.
