Electric and manual breast pumps

En savoir plus

An electric breast pump suits you if you express every day, for example when you go back to work, while a manual pump is enough for an occasional bottle. Either way, comfort depends above all on a flange of the right size and suction that does not hurt.

This section covers both types, with the Philips Avent manual pump, the Mammia electric pump and Babymoov accessories for expressed milk. Order online with delivery across Morocco, free from 300 DH, or free collection from our Maârif showroom in Casablanca.

Which breast pump should I choose?

  • Manual breast pump: you work the handle yourself, with no plug or battery. It suits occasional use and outings, when you want a light, quiet device.
  • Single electric breast pump: a motor does the suction, one breast at a time. It suits regular use, several times a week or a day.
  • Double electric breast pump: it expresses from both breasts at once and shortens sessions. It suits daily, sustained use, especially at work.
  • Hands-free breast pump: a compact electric model worn inside your bra. It suits you if you want to keep your hands free during a session.

How to choose an electric or manual breast pump

  • Flange size: your nipple should move freely in the tunnel, without rubbing or pulling in the areola. The wrong size makes expressing uncomfortable and less effective.
  • Settings: on an electric pump, adjustable suction and rhythm let you start gently, often with a faster stimulation phase.
  • Closed system: on a model with tubing, a barrier stops milk from flowing back towards the motor.
  • Portability: weight, noise level and a rechargeable battery matter if you express at the office or on the move.
  • Cleaning: few parts that are easy to take apart make washing simpler after each session.

Good to know in Morocco

  • Going back to work: the Labour Code gives employees a paid one-hour breastfeeding break each day for the twelve months after they return to work (article 161). A battery-powered electric pump helps you organise these sessions at the office.
  • Summer heat: expressed milk must stay cool. At the office or on the move, bring an insulated bag with an ice pack and write the date on each container.
  • Advice at the showroom: in Maârif, our team shows you how to assemble and clean the parts, discreetly.

Frequently asked questions

When can I start using a breast pump?

You can express from the first days if the situation calls for it, for example for a premature baby. If breastfeeding is going well, it is often advised to wait until it is well established before offering bottles. Your midwife can guide you.

Is it normal for expressing to hurt?

No, expressing should not hurt. Pain often signals a poorly fitting flange or suction that is too strong: start on the gentlest setting. If the discomfort continues, see your midwife or a lactation consultant.

How do I clean a breast pump?

Take apart and wash all the parts that come into contact with milk after each session, following the manufacturer’s instructions. On an electric model, the motor unit is never washed in water.

How should I store expressed milk?

Use clean containers designed for breast milk, note the date it was expressed and follow the storage times recommended by your midwife or doctor. If you freeze it, do not fill the container to the brim: milk expands as it freezes.
