Which bouncer should you choose?

  • The classic bouncer: placed on the floor, it holds baby in a semi-reclined position. Examples: the Bébé Confort Aster, Melilo and Starlight, the Maxi-Cosi Kori and Dove Pro, or the Badabulle foldable bouncer.
  • The raised rocker: it lifts baby up to keep them at your level, like the Badabulle Compact Up; the settings are listed on its product page.
  • The baby swing: it rocks baby, like the Badabulle side-to-side swing.
  • Convertible options: the Doomoo Seat’n Grow convertible bean bag bouncer, or the Bébé Confort Timba Baby, a bouncer compatible with the Timba high chair.

What to check before you buy

  • The maximum age and weight given by the manufacturer.
  • Harness and recline: number of backrest positions and how easy they are to adjust.
  • Size: folding, weight and the space available in your living room.
  • Care: removable cover or not, washing instructions.
  • Extras: play arch, music, vibration or electric rocking, only if the model’s product page mentions them.

Frequently asked questions

Can baby sleep in a bouncer?

A baby bouncer is not designed for prolonged sleep. If baby falls asleep, move them to their cot, lying on their back.

Where should you put a baby rocker?

On the floor, on a flat, stable surface, never on a table or a bed, with the harness fastened and always within an adult’s sight. For a raised model, follow the instructions.

Until when can you use a baby rocker?

Respect the model’s maximum age and weight. Generally, you stop using the bouncer as soon as baby can sit up unaided, unless the manufacturer intends it to convert for later use.

Baby bouncer, swing or rocker: which to choose and how to use it

Seat’n Grow convertible bean bag bouncer in organic cotton Grey Doomoo

A baby bouncer, also called a baby rocker, is a small reclined seat placed on the floor, either fixed or moving with baby’s movements. A baby swing, on the other hand, rocks on its own, usually thanks to a motor. Both are for short periods of play close to you: harness fastened, always on the floor, never for sleeping.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the difference between a bouncer and a baby swing?

A bouncer, or rocker, is a reclined seat placed on the floor, either fixed or moving with baby’s movements. A baby swing rocks on its own, powered by an electric or battery motor, and takes up more space. The safety rules are the same: harness fastened, on the floor, never for sleeping.

Baby rocker and bouncer: are they the same thing?

Yes. In French, “relax” or “baby-relax” is simply another name for the “transat” (bouncer): France’s Assurance Maladie and the HAS use both terms together. The advice on this page therefore applies to baby rockers too.

From what age can baby go in a bouncer?

Most models can be used from birth, often with an infant insert for the first weeks. Follow the age given in the manufacturer’s instructions and keep sessions short.
