Key points
- The doudou helps a child soothe themselves and move from home to the outside world.
- Before age 1 the cot stays empty: the doudou keeps your baby company only while awake.
- Small, light, no detachable parts, with the age stated: no big soft toy for a baby.
- Buy two identical ones, for washing days and in case of loss.
- Never a pacifier clip during sleep.
A rabbit with chewed ears, a muslin square that has lost its colour, a bear that has made the trip to the family home in the countryside three times. To an adult, it is just a scrap of fabric. To a child, it is a treasure no other soft toy can replace. The doudou (French for a baby's comforter) is no whim: it plays a real part in a little one's emotional development.
You still need to use it safely, especially in the first year, choose it with care and plan for the drama of the lost doudou. Here are the essentials.
What is a doudou for?
Learning to soothe yourself. Psychologists speak of a "transitional object", a notion described by the British paediatrician and psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott.
The PMI of the Vienne, the maternal and child protection service of a French département, sums up its functions:
- it reassures, because it carries a known, familiar smell;
- it soothes strong emotions, such as anger, fear or sadness;
- it bridges home, parents and the outside world;
- it encourages independence, when the child can take it freely.
The need often appears around 6 or 7 months, according to Réseau Morphée, a French specialist in children's sleep. The Canadian Paediatric Society (CPS) notes that these objects often become very important between ages 1 and 2. It is not compulsory, though: a thumb, a pacifier or a simple corner of cloth sometimes does the same job. During the 8-month separation anxiety as well as toddler tantrums, it often becomes a precious ally.

From what age can a doudou sleep with your baby?
From age 1. Before that, your baby's cot stays empty: the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) reminds us that soft objects increase the risk of suffocation and asks for no blanket, pillow or soft toy in the cot during the first year. The UK’s NHS also asks you not to put a soft toy in an infant's cot. In France, the 1000 first days programme lists big comforters among the objects that carry a risk.
Before age 1, then, the doudou keeps your baby company while awake, in your arms, on the play mat or in the pushchair. Once your child is asleep, it is taken out of the cot. All the rules of safe sleep are covered in our article on safe sleeping.
After age 1, the doudou can go in the cot and join the bedtime ritual. One is enough: Réseau Morphée advises keeping the bed for sleep and not overloading it with toys.
How to choose a good doudou
Simple, small and sturdy. In Morocco, toy safety is regulated by a 2015 order of the Ministry of Industry (no. 2575-14), published in the Official Bulletin of 15 October 2015: among other things, it requires manufacturers to display clear, precise warnings on the toy. The Carrières-sous-Poissy leaflet reminds us, for its part, that a doudou's quality must meet European standards.
Before buying, check:
| Criterion | What to look at |
|---|---|
| Age stated | A doudou suitable “from birth” if your baby is small |
| Size and weight | Small and light, preferably flat for a baby |
| Finish | Embroidered eyes and nose, nothing that comes off when pulled |
| Care | Machine washable, as per the label |
| Where you buy | A retailer that shows the brand, the label and the warnings |
Be wary of soft toys sold without a label at markets or as Achoura approaches: with no brand or warnings, there is no way of knowing whether they follow the rules. Our doudou range and our selection of soft toys give you ideas, brand by brand.
One last piece of advice: let your child choose. The doudou they love is not always the one you bought. Sometimes it is a muslin, a scarf or mum's T-shirt.

The spare: the trick against the lost doudou
A doudou gets lost at the beach, in a taxi, at the bottom of a trolley or at an aunt's house. Réseau Morphée is clear: as soon as your child becomes attached to a doudou, get several. The town of Carrières-sous-Poissy advises buying several identical doudous, both in case of loss and for washing days.
To get the spare accepted:
- Buy it early, as soon as your child shows a preference, while the model is still on sale.
- Swap the two every week, so they have the same smell and the same wear.
- Label them with your child's first name and a phone number, on a sewn-in tag.
- Take a photo: the picture helps you find it or buy the same model again.
And if the doudou is truly lost? Tell the truth, in simple words, and welcome the sadness without playing it down. The spare, or a new doudou chosen by your child, will take over.
Should you wash the doudou?
Yes, but in moderation, because opinions differ. For the town of Carrières-sous-Poissy, regular washing is necessary for your child's health. For the PMI of the Vienne, its smell is precisely what reassures, and it is better to limit washing.
The right compromise:
- wash it when it is dirty, and after a contagious illness;
- follow the label: machine wash in a laundry bag, or hand wash for delicate models;
- use the same detergent as for their clothes, as Carrières-sous-Poissy advises, to keep a familiar smell;
- dry it completely before handing it back;
- make the most of the spare: your child keeps one while the other is in the wash.
Doudou at nursery, at grandma's, on the road
The doudou travels with your child. The PMI of the Vienne recommends that it goes back and forth between home and the childcare setting: it is what links the two worlds. At nursery, it helps get through the first days, as our article on settling in at nursery explains. Keep the spare at home, in reserve.
At the grandparents', on holiday or during a move, it remains a stable landmark when everything around your child is changing. Slip it in the bag the night before, not at the last minute.
Until what age should a child keep their doudou?
There is no age limit. The PMI of the Vienne explains that children let go of it by themselves, usually when they can express their emotions in words and have friends and activities. Some keep it for years, at the bottom of the bed or on a shelf.
There is no need to confiscate it when they start nursery school. You can support a gradual separation, as Carrières-sous-Poissy suggests: the doudou stays beside your child during meals or play, then waits in their bedroom during the day. On nights of nightmares, illness or big change, it takes its place again: see also our advice on nightmares and night terrors.
Frequently asked questions
My child has no doudou: is that a problem?
No. The French sleep network Réseau Morphée points out that a doudou is not essential. Many children find other ways to soothe themselves: a thumb, a pacifier or a corner of cloth can play the same role, according to the PMI of the Vienne département. There is no need to force one on them. Offer a soft object if they show an interest, and let them choose.
Can I give a doudou to a newborn?
Yes, it is even a classic birth gift. But your baby does not sleep with it: the American Academy of Pediatrics asks for a cot empty of any soft object, soft toys included, throughout the first year. The doudou can keep your baby company during waking moments, under your eye. Réseau Morphée notes that the need for a doudou often appears around 6 or 7 months: your child may well choose another object.
My child refuses the spare copy of their doudou: what can I do?
It happens, especially when the second one arrives late, with a different smell and texture. The ideal is to have both copies as soon as your child becomes attached to one (Réseau Morphée and the town of Carrières-sous-Poissy advise having several), then to swap them regularly. If the spare is brand new, let it sleep near you for a few nights and wash it with the same detergent.
Can a doudou go to nursery school?
Often yes, at least for naptime or the first few days: check with the school. The doudou links home and the childcare setting, reminds the PMI of the Vienne, which recommends letting it go back and forth. Gradually, your child may agree to leave it in their bag or cubby and find it again when they need it.
