Teething: what happens and what really helps

What to avoid:
- Numbing gels for gums: the AAP advises against them, and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warns against benzocaine products for children under 2.
- Teething necklaces and bracelets (amber, wood, silicone): the FDA warns against them because of the risk of choking and strangulation, and the AAP notes that they do not relieve pain.

Cooling, hygiene and safety: good habits in Morocco

How to brush your baby's teeth
- From the first tooth, brush at least twice a day, especially in the evening before bed.
- Measure the toothpaste: according to the AAP, a rice-grain smear of fluoride toothpaste until age 3, then a pea-sized amount at 3. Ask your pediatrician or dentist which toothpaste suits your child.
- Get your baby comfortable, back against you, and gently brush every surface, including the gum around emerging teeth.
