Quick answer: the Dr. Brown's Options+ anti-colic bottle is a wide-neck bottle with a removable internal vent system, designed according to the manufacturer for vacuum-free feeding and a consistent flow. For a newborn, choose a 150 ml bottle with a Level 1 nipple, in glass or plastic, then move up to 270 ml and Level 2, 3 or 4 nipples as your baby's feeding develops. The vent works best in place but can be removed later without changing bottles.

Dr. Brown's in brief: why this bottle is different

Dr. Brown's is an American baby brand born from a doctor's invention and known for its internally vented bottle. The brand says it has been developing products since 1996; today its range covers bottles, nipples, pacifiers, teethers, breast pumps and cups.

In a standard bottle, sucking creates a vacuum: the nipple collapses, baby has to let go to let air in, and bubbles form in the milk. In the Options+ bottle, the nipple and vent system work together to provide, according to Dr. Brown's, vacuum-free feeding and a consistent flow, without baby swallowing excess air: air travels through the internal parts under the nipple instead of through the milk.

Dr. Brown's describes this system as "clinically proven" to reduce colic, spit-up, burping and gas. That is the manufacturer's claim: a baby's crying often has several causes. If your baby cries a lot or spits up often, talk to your paediatrician, and see our guides to Dr. Brown's pacifiers and bottle sterilising for everyday comfort and hygiene.

Glass or plastic, 150 or 270 ml: how to choose

Glass or polypropylene

The glass bottle (150 ml 131 DHSee price / Order, 270 ml 155 DHSee price / Order) suits parents who want less plastic; it is heavier and more fragile, so best at home. Polypropylene, BPA-free according to the manufacturer, is light and goes with baby to the nursery, the nanny, the grandparents or on holiday. Many families use both.

60, 150, 270 or 330 ml

The 150 ml covers the first weeks; the 270 ml takes over as feeds grow; the 330 ml, supplied with a Level 2 nipple, is for older babies. Amounts vary from baby to baby: check them with your paediatrician.

Starter kit or gift set

The Options+ starter kit 449 DHSee price / Order brings together several wide-neck bottles and nipples of different levels (exact contents on the box). The pink 549 DHSee price / Order and blue 549 DHSee price / Order gift sets contain two 270 ml bottles, one 150 ml bottle, a bottle brush, a teether, a pacifier and two brushes: a popular gift for a maternity visit or a naming ceremony (sbouâ).

Premature babies and special needs

The 60 ml 2-pack 250 DHSee price / Order comes with the Preemie nipple, the brand's slowest flow, which Dr. Brown's describes as suited to premature and breastfed newborns; it fits most breast pumps. The Specialty Feeding System 250 ml 207 DHSee price / Order is designed to help manage complicated feeding issues such as cleft lip or palate: a valve in the nipple lets baby control the flow with less effort. Use it on the advice of your care team.

Dr. Brown's nipples: Levels 1 to 4, Y-cut and Preemie

Wide-neck nipples are 100% silicone, sold in pairs, and fit all Options+ wide-neck bottles. According to the manufacturer, flow is consistent between nipples of the same level, and the age is only a guide.

When to change? If baby gets frustrated, sucks very hard or takes a very long time to finish, the flow may be too slow. If baby coughs or milk runs down the cheeks, it is too fast: go back a level. Check nipples before each use and throw away any damaged nipple.

Using the bottle with or without the vent system

According to Dr. Brown's, the Options+ bottle works best with the internal vent in place. As baby's feeding develops, you can remove it "when you feel it's time" without changing bottles: the nipple has its own venting, and the bottle then works like a nipple-vented bottle.

  1. Clean hands, clean bottle, assembled with its vent parts.
  2. Water and powder: follow the scoops on the tin. WHO recommends making up powdered formula with water at no less than 70 °C, then cooling it quickly. The 3-compartment Dr. Brown's formula dispenser 106 DHSee price / Order saves carrying the whole tin.
  3. Check the temperature on the inside of your wrist, then feed baby semi-upright, with pauses.

In Morocco: heat, travel, Ramadan, going back to work

  • Heat: WHO recommends using a formula feed within two hours and discarding leftovers; in summer, don't prepare bottles in advance.
  • Travel: polypropylene bottle, hot water in a flask, powder in the dispenser, mix at feeding time.
  • Ramadan nights: keep an assembled bottle and a filled dispenser ready for night and suhoor feeds.
  • Back to work: Dr. Brown's says its nipple eases the move from breast to bottle and back. See our Dr. Brown's breast pump guide.

Cleaning and sterilising a Dr. Brown's bottle

A vented bottle has more parts: that is the only real extra effort. After each feed, take everything apart (bottle, nipple, collar, cap, vent parts), rinse, then wash in hot soapy water in a basin and with a brush used only for baby items; the US CDC advises against washing directly in the sink. Air-dry on a clean towel, without wiping.

According to Dr. Brown's, bottles and nipples are top-rack dishwasher safe and can go in electric or microwave sterilisers and boiling water. The CDC recommends sanitising at least once a day if baby is under 2 months, was born prematurely or has a weakened immune system. The Dr. Brown's steriliser and dryer 1330 DHSee price / Order sterilises and dries up to six bottles according to the manufacturer: see our steriliser-dryer guide.

What comes next? The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) suggests offering a cup around 6 months and completing the switch between 12 and 18 months: see our Dr. Brown's cups guide.
