Quick answer: the Dr. Brown's electric sterilizer and dryer (model AC178-INTL, 220-240 V version) steam-sterilizes and then dries up to 6 bottles together with nipples, pacifiers, teethers and breast-pump parts. According to the official instructions, sterilizing takes about 9 minutes with 110 mL of water, drying about 45 minutes, and two HEPA filters are included. In Morocco it is the most practical option for parents who give several bottles a day and want dry, ready-to-use bottles without a tea towel.

Do you really need to sterilize baby bottles?

Sterilizing removes the germs left after washing: always wash first, in hot soapy water with a bottle brush, then sterilize.

The US CDC recommends sanitizing feeding items at least once a day, and stresses this for babies under 2 months, premature babies and babies with a weakened immune system. For an older, healthy baby, the CDC says daily sanitizing may not be necessary if items are carefully cleaned. It lists three methods: boiling for 5 minutes, steam (plug-in or microwave steam system, following the manufacturer's instructions) and a dishwasher with hot water and a heated drying cycle.

For formula, WHO reminds parents that powdered infant formula is not sterile: bottles and nipples should be clean and sterilized, and the powder should be mixed with water at no less than 70 °C. Our series also covers choosing Dr. Brown's anti-colic bottles, nipple levels included.

In Morocco, summer heat and bottles prepared away from home (at the grandparents', at nursery, in the car) are two good reasons to keep a strict routine. If you are unsure about your situation (prematurity, hospital stay, treatment), ask your paediatrician.

The Dr. Brown's electric sterilizer and dryer: what it does

The Dr. Brown's electric sterilizer and dryer with HEPA filter 1330 DHSee price / Order we sell is the international version AC178-INTL, designed for European mains power: 220-240 V, 50-60 Hz, 600 W, with an E/F plug. It therefore plugs straight into Moroccan wall sockets (220 V) without an adapter. Do not confuse it with the US 110-120 V versions sold on foreign websites.

Capacity

According to Dr. Brown's, it holds up to 6 bottles at a time, placed upside down on the rack prongs, plus small items: nipples, pacifiers, teethers, breast-pump parts. The rack fits all Dr. Brown's bottles, and an accessory tray stacks on top to save space.

Four functions

  • Sterilize only: about 9 minutes according to the instructions (time varies with the amount of water, number of items and the room).
  • Dry only: about 45 minutes, without water, to dry washed bottles.
  • Sterilize + dry: the full cycle, ideal in the evening so bottles are dry the next morning.
  • Storage: according to Dr. Brown's Benelux, contents stay sterile for up to 24 hours if the lid stays closed.

According to the manufacturer, the steam kills 99.9% of household germs (bacteria, mould and the yeast that causes thrush).

The HEPA filter

During drying, the air passes through a HEPA filter which, according to Dr. Brown's, captures up to 95% of airborne particles. Two filters are included (one fitted, one spare); each should be replaced after 6 months of regular use. In the box: the unit, removable rack, accessory tray, water measuring cup and two filters.

Step-by-step use (and care in Morocco)

  1. Wash first: bottles, nipples and vent parts in hot soapy water, then rinse. The sterilizer does not replace washing.
  2. Pour 110 mL of water (solid line on the measuring cup) onto the heating plate. The instructions ask for non-mineral bottled water and never more than the stated amount. No water for "dry only".
  3. Load bottles upside down on the rack, then small items in the gaps and on the tray.
  4. Close and choose the programme. During the cycle, do not open the lid or reach over the unit: steam burns.
  5. Wait 10 minutes after sterilizing before opening the lid by its handle, and watch out for residual steam.
  6. Keep the lid closed if you are not using the bottles straight away, and take them out with clean hands.

Descaling: essential with hard water

In many Moroccan cities tap water quickly leaves white deposits in kettles. Dr. Brown's instructions call for monthly descaling: unplug and let the unit cool for 60 minutes, pour 80 mL of white vinegar plus 30 mL of non-mineral bottled water (110 mL in total), run an empty "sterilize only" cycle, then empty and rinse. Using low-mineral water limits scale between descales.

Organising bottles, dispenser and accessories day to day

How many bottles do you need?

With 6 places in the sterilizer, a rotation of 6 bottles means one full cycle a day, usually in the evening. The Options+ starter kit 449 DHSee price / Order and the Options+ 270 mL 2-pack 238 DHSee price / Order are enough to build it. Glass bottles such as the Options+ 270 mL glass bottle 155 DHSee price / Order can go in the sterilizer too.

The formula dispenser: powder measured in advance

The Dr. Brown's formula dispenser 106 DHSee price / Order (also in blue 106 DHSee price / Order) has 3 separate compartments, each holding the powder for a 270 mL bottle, a snap-on lid and a rotating pour spout. It is top-rack dishwasher safe and BPA-free, according to Dr. Brown's Australia. It is ideal for outings: measured powder on one side, hot water in a flask on the other, and each bottle made up just before the feed, as WHO recommends.

Working mums, nights and Ramadan

If your baby stays with a nanny, a grandmother or at nursery, prepare a "day kit" the evening before: sterilized bottles kept closed, a filled dispenser and spare nipples. During Ramadan, when nights are short and the kitchen is busy before ftour, running the sterilize + dry cycle after the meal gives you dry bottles for the night. If you express milk, the parts of the Dr. Brown's manual breast pump 599 DHSee price / Order can be sterilized in the same unit: see our Dr. Brown's breast pump and breastfeeding guide.

Summer, travel and heat

In hot weather, never leave a prepared bottle in the car or in the sun. WHO recommends discarding any infant formula not consumed within two hours. On holiday, if you have a 220 V socket the sterilizer travels easily; otherwise boiling for 5 minutes remains a back-up.

Pacidose: an accessory, not medical advice

The Dr. Brown's Pacidose 160 DHSee price / Order is a pacifier-shaped tip connected to a graduated oral syringe; according to the manufacturer, the liquid flows through the nipple, behind the taste buds. It is top-rack dishwasher and sterilizer safe. The dose, timing and duration of any treatment are for your doctor or pharmacist alone to decide: follow their prescription and the medicine leaflet.

Frequently asked questions

Until what age should you sterilize baby bottles?

110 mL of non-mineral bottled water, measured with the cup provided and poured onto the heating plate. Do not exceed it, and descale monthly with white vinegar as described in the instructions.

Does the Dr. Brown's sterilizer work with Moroccan sockets?

Yes, the version we sell: the AC178-INTL is designed for 220-240 V, 50-60 Hz, with a European E/F plug. Avoid US 110-120 V versions bought abroad.

How long do bottles stay sterile?

According to Dr. Brown's Benelux, up to 24 hours if the lid stays closed after the cycle. Once the lid is opened, use the bottles promptly.
