Key points

  • Always wash before sterilising: sterilising does not replace cleaning.
  • The CDC advises sanitising at least daily, especially under 2 months, for premature babies and babies with weaker immunity.
  • Several bottles a day: an electric steam steriliser (Steamy, 5 bottles in 8 min, 650 DH).
  • Just the occasional bottle: a 2-in-1 warmer + steriliser (Warmy Advanced, 750 DH).
  • Descale regularly, as water is often hard in Morocco.

Bottles, teats, dummies: during the first months, your baby's feeding gear spends a lot of time in their mouth. Sterilising it is part of the routine for many Moroccan families. But do you have to do it every time, with which appliance and for how long? Here are clear answers based on official recommendations, plus our comparison of the sterilisers available at La Maison du Bébé.

Do you need to sterilise baby bottles?

The CDC (US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) recommends sanitising feeding items at least once a day to remove extra germs. It says this is especially important for babies under 2 months, babies born prematurely and babies with a weakened immune system. For older, healthy babies, daily sanitising may not be necessary if items are carefully cleaned after each use.

There is no single cut-off age that applies to everyone: ask your paediatrician, especially if your baby was born prematurely or is often unwell.

Remember: sterilising never replaces washing. First wash in hot soapy water with a bottle brush, rinse, then sterilise.

How to choose a steriliser: 5 criteria

1. Capacity

Count how many bottles your baby drinks a day. A 5-bottle steriliser lets you do everything in a single cycle, once or twice a day.

2. Accessories it takes

Check the space for teats, dummies, rings and small parts. The Steamy has a special rack for them. For breast-pump parts, check that their manufacturer allows steam sterilising.

3. The size of your bottles

Wide-neck bottles take up more room. If in doubt, send us a photo of your bottles on WhatsApp before you buy.

4. Safety

Auto shut-off and a low-water alert are essential. Always let it cool before opening: the steam is scalding.

5. Maintenance

In Morocco, water is often hard. Descale the heating plate regularly following the manufacturer's instructions (usually with white vinegar or diluted citric acid, then rinse).

Sterilising a bottle step by step

  1. Wash your hands.
  2. Take the bottle completely apart: bottle, teat, ring, cap.
  3. Wash every part in hot soapy water with a brush, then rinse.
  4. Pour water into the base of the steriliser as indicated.
  5. Place the bottles upside down and the small parts on the rack, then close.
  6. Start the cycle and wait for the end signal.
  7. Let it cool, take the parts out with clean hands and reassemble the bottles.

Without a steriliser, the CDC says to cover the separated parts with water in a pot, bring to a boil and boil for 5 minutes, then remove them with clean tongs.

Frequently asked questions

Until what age should I sterilise baby bottles?

There is no single age. The CDC stresses babies under 2 months, premature babies and those with a weakened immune system; for an older, healthy baby, careful washing may be enough. Ask your paediatrician.

How long does steam sterilising take?

8 minutes with the Miniland Steamy, which beeps and lights up at the end of the cycle and then switches itself off. In a saucepan, the CDC indicates 5 minutes of boiling.

Can I sterilise teats, dummies and breast-pump parts?

Yes for teats and dummies, which the Steamy holds on its dedicated rack. For breast-pump parts, follow their manufacturer's instructions.

Electric or microwave steriliser: which should I choose?

The electric one runs on its own, switches off automatically and does not tie up the family microwave. The microwave type is more compact but requires you to follow the power and time set by its manufacturer.

How do I descale a steriliser?

Empty the water after each cycle, then descale the heating plate regularly according to the instructions, usually with white vinegar or diluted citric acid, followed by a rinse.

How much does a bottle steriliser cost in Morocco?

650 DH for the Miniland Steamy and 750 DH for the Warmy Advanced 2-in-1 at La Maison du Bébé, with free delivery anywhere in Morocco from 300 DH and cash on delivery.
