Key points

  • Just want to hear: a DECT audio baby monitor (VTech BM1120, 500 DH).
  • See without going in, talk to baby, night vision: a video baby monitor (VTech Clear Plus BM3254, 1,350 DH).
  • Stated range is measured in open field: indoors, expect much less.
  • No Wi-Fi or app: no possible access from the internet.
  • Baby unit and cable at least 1 metre from the cot; a monitor does not replace supervision.

A baby monitor lets your baby nap in their room while you are in the living room, the kitchen or on the terrace. In Morocco, between flats with thick walls, multi-storey houses and riads, range is a real question. Here is how to choose between audio and video, and what to check before you buy.

The 3 types of baby monitor

Audio baby monitor

The baby unit picks up sounds in the room and sends them to the parent unit. It is simple, affordable and battery life is generally good. The VTech Classic BM1120 audio baby monitor 500 DHSee price / Order uses digital DECT technology, which limits crackling and interference; 5 lights show the sound level, even with the volume off.

Video baby monitor

A camera in the room and a screen for the parents: one glance tells you whether baby is asleep, has rolled over or is just babbling. The VTech Clear Plus BM3254 video baby monitor 1 350 DHSee price / Order has a 2.8-inch colour screen, automatic infrared night vision and a talk-back function so you can speak to your baby.

Connected (Wi-Fi) baby monitor

It sends the picture to your smartphone through an app, even when you are away from home. It is convenient, but it depends on your internet connection and needs a strong password and regular updates. Both VTech models in our selection, by contrast, communicate directly between camera and screen, with no internet and no account to create.

How to choose a baby monitor: 6 criteria

1. Real range

Manufacturers state range "in open field", meaning with no obstacles. Indoors, every wall and concrete floor reduces it. VTech states 50 to 60 m indoors for the BM1120. For a typical flat or house that is plenty; in a large villa or a riad, test the link in the rooms where you spend the most time.

2. Audio or video

If you sleep in the same room or very close by, audio is often enough. If your baby's room is on another floor, or you want to avoid opening the door at every sound, video makes life much easier.

3. Technology and privacy

Digital DECT and FHSS links run directly between the two units and do not go through the internet. Nobody can connect to your baby monitor remotely through an app.

4. Battery life

Check the parent unit's battery type and whether there is a standby mode. On the Clear Plus, the screen stays off and wakes as soon as baby makes a sound, which saves battery at night.

5. Alerts

The BM1120's out-of-range and low-battery alerts stop you thinking all is quiet when the link has actually dropped. The Clear Plus temperature sensor is useful in hot summers as well as on cool winter nights.

6. Comfort features

Talking to baby from a distance, playing a lullaby, switching on a night light: these features help soothe your baby without going into the room.

Set-up and safety

  • Distance: the CPSC, the US product safety agency, recommends keeping baby monitors and their cords at least 3 feet (about 1 metre) from the crib, to avoid any risk of strangulation by a cord.
  • Cables: route the cable away from the cot and out of reach, even as your baby grows and pulls up to stand.
  • First charge: VTech recommends charging the Clear Plus parent unit for 12 hours before first use.
  • Test: check the link by speaking near the baby unit before leaving the room.
  • A tool, not a guarantee: a baby monitor is not a medical device and does not replace your supervision or safe-sleep rules. According to the CPSC, a bare crib is baby's best sleeping area: lay your baby on their back, on a firm mattress, with no pillows or soft toys.

What about a night light?

A soft night light helps with night feeds and changes without switching on the ceiling light. The VTech Lumi Owl plush night light 310 DHSee price / Order (310 DH) offers a starry light, 30 melodies, white noise, a timer and a cry sensor. For trips away, the Winfun portable musical night light 170 DHSee price / Order (170 DH) slips into your bag.

Frequently asked questions

What is the real range of a baby monitor?

It is always less than the stated open-field range. VTech gives the BM1120 up to 460 m outdoors and 50 to 60 m indoors; the Clear Plus states up to 300 m in open field.

Does a baby monitor work without Wi-Fi?

Yes, the VTech BM1120 and Clear Plus BM3254 communicate directly between their two units (DECT or FHSS 2.4 GHz), with no internet, no app and no account.

Can I see my baby in the dark?

With the Clear Plus, yes: infrared night vision switches on automatically as the light fades, and the image turns black and white.

Audio or video baby monitor: which should I choose?

Audio is enough if you only want to hear your baby and stay close by. Video is more comfortable when the room is far away or on another floor, and lets you check without going in.

How far from the cot should the baby monitor be?

At least 1 metre, with the cable out of reach. That is the distance the CPSC recommends for baby monitors and their cords.

How much does a baby monitor cost in Morocco?

500 DH for the VTech Classic BM1120 audio monitor and 1,350 DH for the VTech Clear Plus video monitor at La Maison du Bébé, with free delivery anywhere in Morocco and cash on delivery.
