Quick answer: to choose a baby night light, go for a soft, warm light (amber, orange or red) set to its lowest level, with a timer or automatic shut-off, and a model suited to your child's age. An automatic plug-in night light is enough for night feeds, a projector or musical night light supports the bedtime routine, and a portable lamp reassures a toddler who is afraid of the dark. In Morocco, expect to pay under 250 DH for a plug-in night light, 250 to 700 DH for a musical night light, a light-up soft toy or a projector, and over 1,000 DH for a connected night light. Our go-to picks: the Badabulle Gouttes automatic wall night light 200 DHSee price / Order, the Chicco Next2 Stars projector 380 DHSee price / Order, the Maxi-Cosi Soothe connected night light 1 174 DHSee price / Order and our full night light and projector range.

Why use a night light in the nursery?

A night light is not essential, and in the first months it is mostly for the parents. It is still genuinely useful:

  • Night feeds and changes: you can see what you are doing without switching on the ceiling light and waking everyone up.
  • Checking without waking: one glance tells you baby is asleep.
  • Bedtime routine: dimmed light, a lullaby and stars on the ceiling signal every evening that it is time to sleep.
  • Fear of the dark: often from around age 2, a small light helps a child fall asleep alone and settle back after waking.

The 6 types of baby night light

1. Plug-in or automatic night light

Plugged into a wall socket, it gives a soft glow close to the floor: the simplest and most affordable option for nights, in the nursery or the hallway. Automatic models switch on by themselves in the dark, such as the Safety 1st Arctic automatic night light 150 DHSee price / Order (which does not heat up, according to its product sheet) or the Badabulle pink Gouttes automatic wall night light 200 DHSee price / Order, also available in blue drops 200 DHSee price / Order. Entry-level: the Babymoov wall night light 150 DHSee price / Order.

2. Portable lamp

Cordless, it goes anywhere. The Badabulle Lily Sheep portable lamp 215 DHSee price / Order lights up night-time bottles, then reassures 2-3-year-olds.

3. Musical night light soft toy

A cuddly toy that glows and sings: the ultimate newborn gift. According to the manufacturer, the Tiny Love Snuggly Buddy Panda 446 DHSee price / Order combines a soft light with 3 levels, 8 lullabies, 5 white noises and a timer, with USB-C charging and a machine-washable cover (electronics removed). The VTech Lumi Owl 310 DHSee price / Order offers 5 colours, 30 melodies, white noise and a cry sensor. More affordable: the Winfun Soothing Sounds light-up owl 285 DHSee price / Order. A night light soft toy never goes in a young baby's cot (see below).

4. Star projector

It projects stars or shapes onto the ceiling, often with music. The Chicco Next2 Stars 380 DHSee price / Order turns off after 30 minutes, restarts via a sound sensor when baby cries and attaches to the bars of a cot or the Next2Me bedside crib. The Tiny Love Boho Chic Tiny Dreamer 3-in-1 460 DHSee price / Order combines music, projection and night light, for 0 to 36 months according to Tiny Love. Cuddlier: the Chicco First Dreams musical projector bear 281 DHSee price / Order pairs a plush toy with projection.

5. Connected night light

It is controlled from your smartphone: this is the case of the Maxi-Cosi Soothe connected musical night light 1 174 DHSee price / Order, detailed below.

6. Simple musical night light and music box

For a small budget or the evening routine: the Chicco First Dreams Little Moon musical night light 156 DHSee price / Order, the Winfun On-the-Go elephant portable night light 170 DHSee price / Order or the Chicco red panda music box 173 DHSee price / Order.

Which light colour and brightness?

Sleep depends partly on melatonin, a hormone produced in darkness, and evening light can slow its release. Here is what recognised sources say:

  • Blue light is the most disruptive. Harvard Health reports that blue light suppressed melatonin for about twice as long as green light, and advises using dim red lights for night lights.
  • Young children are very sensitive to light. In a University of Colorado Boulder study (2022) of children aged 3 to 5, one hour of even dim light before bedtime lowered melatonin by 78% on average. The researchers advise dimming the home at least one hour before bedtime; night lights do not necessarily need to go, but light should be kept to a minimum.

In practice: warm light (amber, orange or red), lowest brightness, placed low and out of baby's direct line of sight. Avoid blue and cold white at night. On a multicolour model (Maxi-Cosi Soothe, Lumi Owl), set a warm shade for the night. If your child has sleep problems, talk to your paediatrician.

Timer, automatic shut-off and cry sensor

There is no need to leave light and music on all night: ideally they help your child fall asleep, then stop. Check the timer (15 or 30 minutes on the Snuggly Buddy and Lumi Owl, 30 minutes on the Next2 Stars), the cry sensor that restarts melodies or light (Next2 Stars, Lumi Owl), the light sensor on automatic wall night lights, and scheduling: the Maxi-Cosi Soothe offers a delayed start and a wake-up light, handy for teaching a 2-3-year-old to wait for morning.

Music, lullabies and white noise: watch the volume

Lullabies and white noise can soothe a baby and mask street or apartment noise. But volume matters: a study published in Pediatrics in 2014, presented by the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, tested 14 infant white-noise machines. At maximum volume, all exceeded 50 dB, the recommended limit for hospital nurseries, and several exceeded 85 dB. The researchers advise placing the device more than 2 metres from the cot, at low volume, and not running it all night.

Our advice: a model with adjustable volume, always started at the lowest setting, placed on furniture away from the cot, with a timer. Lullabies structure the routine, white noise masks background noise; many models offer both.

Projector or simple night light?

In the first weeks, a steady soft light is enough for night-time care. A projector then becomes part of the routine: start the stars and music, baby watches the ceiling, the timer switches everything off and the wall night light takes over. If the projection excites your child, switch to night-light-only mode. A projector attached to the cot, like the Next2 Stars, goes on the outside, out of baby's reach, following the instructions.

Night light soft toys: never in a young baby's cot

This is the most important safety point. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends keeping soft objects, toys and loose bedding out of an infant's sleep area, as they increase the risk of suffocation, entrapment or strangulation. A night light soft toy is one of them: put it on a chest of drawers or a shelf, away from the cot. It glows and sings just as well from there.

Batteries, rechargeable or mains?

  • Mains: always ready, no batteries. Wall night lights and the Maxi-Cosi Soothe (USB mains adapter, no battery according to Maxi-Cosi).
  • Batteries: no cable. Next2 Stars (3 AA batteries, not included), Lumi Owl (2 LR6 batteries, included).
  • USB rechargeable: ideal for a portable night light, like the Snuggly Buddy (USB-C) or the Tiny Dreamer.

Safety: good habits

  • Heat: choose LED, which stays cool, and check by touch after an hour.
  • Cables: no wire near the cot or playpen; run them behind furniture.
  • Batteries: compartment closed with a screw, used batteries never within reach.
  • Placement: on stable furniture, away from the cot, where the night light cannot fall or be grabbed.
  • Authentic products, supplied with the manufacturer's instructions and warnings: beware of unbranded copies.

Frequently asked questions

Which baby night light should I choose?

It depends on use: an automatic wall night light for night feeds, a projector or musical night light with a timer for the bedtime routine, a portable lamp for a child afraid of the dark. Always a warm, dim light.

What colour night light is best for a baby?

A warm colour: amber, orange or red. Harvard Health advises dim red lights for night lights, as blue light suppresses melatonin the most. Avoid blue and cold white at night.

Should the night light stay on all night?

It is not necessary: ideally it switches off with the timer once your child is asleep. If your child needs a constant light, keep it very dim, warm and away from the cot.

From what age can you use a night light?

From birth, if the light is soft and away from the cot; at first it is mainly for the parents. Most of our models are rated from birth by their manufacturer. Fear of the dark often appears around age 2.

Is a projector night light a good idea for a newborn?

Not essential in the first weeks. Later, a projector with a timer like the Chicco Next2 Stars becomes a soothing bedtime cue. If it excites your baby, save it for naps.

Musical night light or white noise?

Lullabies structure the routine, white noise masks background noise. Either way, a Pediatrics study advises placing the device more than 2 metres from the cot, at low volume and not all night.

Can I put a night light soft toy in my baby's cot?

No, not during the first year: the AAP recommends keeping soft objects and toys out of an infant's sleep area. Put it on a piece of furniture.

Where can I buy a baby night light in Morocco or Casablanca?

At La Maison du Bébé, 93 rue Brahim Nakhai, Maârif, Casablanca, where the night lights are displayed switched on, or on our website with delivery anywhere in Morocco. Advice on WhatsApp at +212 6 62 80 07 15.

How much does a baby night light cost in Morocco?

With us, from 150 DH for the Babymoov wall night light to 1 174 DH for the connected Maxi-Cosi Soothe; expect 250 to 700 DH for a branded musical night light or projector.

Do you deliver anywhere in Morocco with cash on delivery?

Yes, free from 300 DH of purchases, with cash on delivery or card payment. Indicative delivery time 24 to 48 hours depending on the city, not guaranteed. Free pick-up at the Maârif showroom.

Which night light makes a good newborn gift?

A musical night light soft toy (Tiny Love Snuggly Buddy, VTech Lumi Owl) or the Chicco First Dreams projector bear; for a premium gift, the Maxi-Cosi Soothe. Gift wrapping available, exchange possible within 7 days.
