A development toy does not have to be complicated: it simply needs to come at the right time, when your baby is ready to use it. Too early and it holds no interest; too late and it gets boring. This guide follows the main stages of development from birth to 3 years, with the types of toy that make sense at each age and our ideas tried and tested in store. It is also handy for finding a gift for a birth, a sbou3 or a birthday.

0–3 months: looking, listening, building strength on the tummy

Newborns mainly see contrasts and nearby objects. The play mat is the star toy of this period: baby plays on their back looking at the hanging toys, then on their tummy. For babies who are not yet mobile, WHO recommends at least 30 minutes a day on the tummy, spread through the day and always while awake.

3–6 months: grasping and chewing

Baby discovers their hands and puts everything in their mouth. This is the time for rattles, teethers and toys to hang up.

6–12 months: sitting, crawling, pulling up

Baby sits up, crawls, then pulls up to stand. They understand cause and effect: I press, it sings. Toys that move and respond attract them.

Push walker or seated baby walker?

A seated baby walker on wheels and a push walker are two different things. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends banning the manufacture and sale of seated walkers because of the injuries they cause. A push walker has no seat: baby moves forward on their own legs, at their own pace. Always use it under supervision, away from stairs. Likewise, WHO advises not restraining a baby or keeping them in a seat for more than one hour at a time: an activity centre is meant for short play sessions.

1–2 years: walking, pushing, matching

The first steps arrive. Children love pushing, pulling, filling and emptying. Touch-and-feel games and first picture books build their vocabulary.

2–3 years: fitting, sorting, naming

Children can now focus on a task for a few minutes. Knob puzzles, giant floor puzzles and first learning games work on fine motor skills, observation and language.

Good to know for bilingual families: puzzles without text can be played in the language of the home, Darija, Arabic or French; Nathan box sets are in French.

Electronic toys: yes, in moderation

Toys with sounds and lights grab attention, but they do not replace simple play (stacking rings, puzzles, balls) or time with an adult. Alternate both, set the volume to the lowest level where possible, and prefer electronic toys without a screen: WHO does not recommend screen time before age 2, and limits it to 1 hour a day at age 2.

Safety: our 5 rules

  1. Respect the age on the box: it reflects the size of the parts, not just how interesting the toy is.
  2. Check for the CE mark and buy from a retailer that sells authentic products.
  3. Batteries: button batteries (such as those in the teething keys) are dangerous if swallowed. Make sure the compartment is closed securely and change batteries yourself.
  4. Hanging toys: remove spirals and hanging toys from the cot as soon as baby starts getting up on their knees.
  5. Inspect and clean regularly: if a part is cracked or coming loose, put the toy away.

Frequently asked questions

What toy should I give a 6-month-old baby?

A toy that responds to their movements: a musical ball, teethers, a sensory book. The Winfun Playtime Buddy ball (200 DH, from 6 months) also encourages crawling.

What toy for a 1-year-old?

A push or pull toy to go with first steps, such as the Winfun Dino Popping Fun (280 DH), or a first touch-and-feel game such as Nathan's Animals to Touch (200 DH).

From what age can a baby use a play mat?

From birth: the Winfun Jungle Pals and BabySpace mats are suitable from 0 months. Always stay close while your baby plays.

Push walker or seated walker: which should I choose?

A push walker, with no seat, lets baby walk on their own legs. The AAP recommends banning seated wheeled walkers because of the injuries they cause.

Should electronic toys be avoided?

No, as long as they have no screen and are alternated with simple play and time with an adult. WHO does not recommend screen time before age 2.

How much do baby development toys cost in Morocco?

At La Maison du Bébé, from 36 DH for a rattle to 650 DH for an activity centre, with delivery anywhere in Morocco, free from 300 DH, and cash on delivery.
