Key points
- Window light, a plain background, a fed and changed baby: the recipe for lovely photos.
- Baby on their back, on a stable surface on the floor, never alone up high.
- "Head on hands" poses are composites: do not attempt them at home.
- Month-by-month photos: same spot, same time, same reference object.
- Online: private group, no bath photos, no recognisable location.
They are asleep, fists clenched under their chin, and you dare not move for fear of waking them. Everyone has told you: "Take photos, it goes so fast." Newborn photos are often the pictures we look at most, years later, and the best newborn photo ideas do not need a studio: a window, a white sheet and a well-fed baby are enough.
You just need to know what is safe for a newborn and what is not. The spectacular poses you see on social media are often composites made by professionals. Here are simple ideas to try at home, month-by-month photos, the safety rules, what to ask a photographer, and how to share without exposing your child.
Easy newborn photo ideas at home
The most beautiful pictures are often the simplest. A few ideas that need no props at all:
- the details: their feet in their dad's hand, their fingers wrapped around your thumb, their eyelashes, their hair, their little rolls;
- skin-to-skin: the baby asleep on mum's or dad's chest, softly backlit;
- siblings: the big brother or sister sitting on the floor with the baby in their arms, an adult right beside them;
- three generations of hands: the baby's, their mum's and their grandmother's, one on top of the other;
- the celebration outfit: the one for the sbou3 (the Moroccan naming celebration on the seventh day), laid beside them or worn for a few minutes, with our ideas for a comfortable sbou3 outfit;
- their name: in wooden letters or in calligraphy, next to the baby lying down;
- family heirlooms: the blanket knitted by a grandmother, the hand of Fatima hanging above the crib.
For the light, position yourself near a window, out of direct sunlight, and switch off any yellow lamps. A plain background, white sheet or neutral throw: the less there is around, the more you see the baby. And choose your moment: right after a feed and a nappy change, when they are full, clean and calm.

Month-by-month baby photos
Month-by-month photos tell the story of their first year in twelve pictures. The secret is consistency:
- The same spot: an armchair, a corner of your bed, a throw spread on the floor.
- The same light: same room, same time of day.
- A reference object: a soft toy, a little chalkboard with their age, a big teddy bear that shows how much they are growing.
- A reminder on your phone on their monthly birthday.
For the first months, photograph them lying on their back on the throw on the floor. Later, once they can sit up on their own, they can sit next to the teddy. Every stage brings something new, and our play and development activities from 0 to 12 months offer lovely ideas for setting the scene: the rattle, the feet caught in their hands, the first toy.
Newborn photography safety: the rules for posing
A newborn cannot hold their head up, does not regulate their temperature well and can tip over in a second. The rules that keep them safe during a photo session:
On the floor, or in your arms. Settle the baby on a stable surface on the floor, on a thick throw laid flat. Never on a high bed, a table or a sofa, not even "just for a second". Quebec's INSPQ lists, among typical fall situations, the adult who steps away from the changing table to fetch something. During a photo session, you are constantly stepping away to move back, frame the shot, grab a prop.
Always an adult within arm's reach. If you are taking the photo, someone else stays next to the baby, a hand at the ready.
No "acrobatic" poses. Baskets, buckets, hanging hammocks, a baby standing or sitting with their head on their hands: these images are composites. An American newborn photographer explains that for the so-called "froggy pose", she combines two images, one where an assistant holds the baby's head and wrists and another where they hold only the head, and that real training is needed before attempting it. Do not copy them at home.
No heavy or small objects around them. Decorative letters, beads, crowns, jewellery: the INSPQ warns that small objects, and cords longer than 20 cm, are choking and strangulation hazards.
Sleep photos are not sleep guidance. A baby asleep on their tummy, surrounded by cushions and soft toys, makes a pretty picture, but the American Academy of Pediatrics reminds parents that for sleep, babies go on their back, on a firm, flat mattress, with no pillow, blanket or soft toys. If the baby falls asleep during the session, put them back on their back in their own cot. Our guide to safe sleep covers this in detail.
Temperature: not too cold, not too hot
Newborn photos are often taken with very few clothes on, and that is where temperature matters. Professionals heat the room so the baby does not get cold. But beware of the opposite extreme: the INSPQ says a comfortable room for a baby is between 20 and 22°C, and the back of their neck should not be clammy. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises watching for sweating and a chest that feels too hot.
In practice: a short session, breaks for feeding and cuddles, a muslin within reach, and dress them again as soon as the shot is done. In a Moroccan summer, a simple bodysuit is often enough, and the session is best done in the morning.
Hiring a newborn photographer: the right questions
If you would rather use a professional, at home or in a studio, ask a few questions before booking:
- What training have you had in newborn photography?
- Do you work with an assistant who stays close to the baby during poses?
- Are the complex poses composites, and can I stay for the session?
- What temperature is the studio, and how many breaks are there for feeds?
- How do you wash fabrics and props between babies, and do you wash your hands before every session?
- What happens to the photos: are they published on your website or social media, and with what consent?
A good newborn photographer is happy to answer, and invites you to stay beside your baby throughout the session.
Baby photos on social media: protecting their privacy
Posting the first photos is a reflex, but France's data protection authority, the CNIL, urges caution. It cites a warning from the Fondation pour l'Enfance: in 2024, half the images of children exchanged on child-abuse forums had first been posted by parents. And a 2018 British study estimated that by the age of 13, a child had on average 1,300 photos of themselves posted by their parents.
Its advice:
- share privately, in a family group or a messaging app, rather than publicly;
- avoid intimate photos, such as bath time or bare skin;
- hide the face if the post is public, or photograph from behind, the feet, the hands;
- turn off geotagging and do not show any recognisable place;
- ask relatives not to reshare without your consent.
These rules also apply to announcing the birth: our ideas for birth announcements and online announcements take them into account.

From photos to keepsakes
A photo that stays on your phone gets lost. Print the best ones every month or every quarter and slip them into an album. Pair your favourite newborn photo with their footprints in a photo and print frame, or keep it in a keepsake box with the hospital bracelet and their first hat. A baby photo frame in their room completes the set.
Finally, remember to get into the photos yourself. Mums are often behind the camera, rarely in front of it. Ask someone to take a picture of you with the baby, hair a mess, tired and all: that is often the very image your child will look for later. And on the day of the sbou3, when the whole family gathers for the announcement of the name, which Le Matin described in Salé amid joyful ululations and music, remember the group photo: it will become more precious with every passing year.
Frequently asked questions
When should you take newborn photos?
Studio newborn sessions are often done in the first weeks, when the baby sleeps a lot and can be settled curled up. There is no rush, though: photos at one or three months, awake and smiling, are just as lovely. At home, the best moment is right after a feed and a nappy change, when the baby is full and calm, ideally during the day to make the most of the light.
Is the pose with the baby's head resting on their hands dangerous?
Yes, if attempted without technique. This pose, often called the "froggy pose", is a composite: trained photographers take one image where an assistant holds the baby's head and wrists, then another where they hold only the head, and merge the two. A newborn cannot hold their head up alone. Do not try it at home.
How do you take good month-by-month baby photos?
Keep the same markers every month: the same spot, the same time, the same blanket or armchair, and an object that gives a sense of scale, such as a soft toy or a little chalkboard with their age. Photograph the baby lying on their back, or sitting once they can, always on the floor or in your arms. Set a reminder on your phone for their monthly birthday.
Can you use a flash to photograph a newborn?
None of our sources mentions any danger to the eyes, but a flash startles and often wakes the baby, and gives harsh images. Natural light from a window, out of direct sun, is softer and more flattering. In the evening, an indirect lamp bounced off a white wall works better than a flash.
