Key points
- For baby: soft fabric, easy poppers, and the size up if in doubt.
- In hot weather, one thick layer fewer; touch the back of the neck to check.
- No jewellery, no cord longer than 20 cm, no hastily sewn-on beads.
- For mum: a loose kaftan, front opening, belt loose or left off after a C-section.
- Two outfits for baby, a spare one for mum: spit-up and leaks wait for no one.
It has been folded in the wardrobe since the eighth month: a little embroidered white outfit, a gift from a grandmother or bought while dreaming of the day. The sbou3 outfit matters a great deal to families, because it will be in every photo of the seventh day. The sbou3 (or sbouâ) is the Moroccan celebration held on a baby’s seventh day, when the name is announced. Yet the outfit has to suit a one-week-old newborn first, who will be passed from arm to arm, spit up, be changed and perhaps get too warm.
And the new mum, too, deserves a party outfit that respects her body: a scar that pulls, breasts that leak, a tummy that is still round. Here are the traditions, the right fabrics and cuts, and the few safety rules that let everyone enjoy the day. For the overall organisation, see our guide to the sbou3 and the aqiqa.
What do people wear for a sbou3? What tradition says
Clothing is part of the ritual. In Salé, Le Matin described in 2007 the lkmassa, brought by the family on the eve of the celebration: clothes, toiletries and toys for mum and baby. In Fez, the Moroccan mums’ website mamanmaroc.ma reports that on the eve, young girls carry a trousseau of kaftans and sheets in procession. In the North, on the afternoon of the seventh day, mum puts on her finest clothes to receive her gifts.
For baby, families most often choose a white or ecru outfit, sometimes a little gandoura (a loose tunic) or a miniature embroidered kaftan, sometimes a ceremony sleepsuit. There is no single rule: the sbou3 outfit is the one that means something to your family, whether it is traditional, modern or handed down from an older sibling.

Choosing baby’s sbou3 outfit well
A good ceremony outfit comes down to three details: fabric, opening and size.
| Criterion | Go for | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Fabric | Soft cotton, muslin, jersey; light velvet in winter | Scratchy synthetics, rough lace at the collar |
| Opening | Poppers at the crotch and front, flat buttons | Back fastenings, long rows of tiny buttons |
| Size | 1 month, or 3 months if in doubt | A “newborn” outfit bought too early, which ends up tight |
| Decorations | Flat-sewn embroidery | Beads, rhinestones, pompoms, glued-on bows |
| Accessories | Soft booties, a hat for the photos | Tight headband, cords, jewellery |
A christening or going-home outfit does the job beautifully, as does a pretty set for a little girl or a little boy. A gandoura or miniature kaftan looks superb in photos but is trickier for changes: plan to put it over a bodysuit, just for the presentation.

Heat and fabrics: dressing baby for the season
The golden rule: dress baby for the room they are in, not for the season on the calendar. A crowded living room in summer, with the kitchen going full blast, quickly goes above 25 °C. Quebec’s public health institute INSPQ says that above 25 °C, a nappy and a light, short garment are usually enough, and that a comfortable room is between 20 and 22 °C. In hot weather, paediatrician Moulay Saïd Afif reminded readers of Médias24 in July 2026 that babies under six months are particularly vulnerable to dehydration, and recommended light cotton clothing.
To tell whether baby is too hot, touch the back of their neck: according to the INSPQ, it should not feel clammy. Nappies that are less wet than usual and darker urine are also a warning sign: take a layer off and offer a feed. In winter, in Moroccan homes that are rarely heated, it is the reverse: an extra layer, a cardigan and booties. Our pointers on how to dress baby for the temperature apply in the daytime too.
Jewellery, cords, embroidery: the safety rules
The sbou3 is often the occasion to give a name bracelet, a little chain with a hand of Fatima, or a gold bangle. It is a lovely gesture, but jewellery has no place on a newborn. A clasp that opens, a charm that comes off, and suddenly there is a small object within reach of baby’s mouth. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the INSPQ list small objects among the major choking risks for young children. A chain can also wrap around or get caught.
The same rules apply to the outfit:
- no cord longer than 20 cm, as the INSPQ recommends, and no ribbon tied around the neck;
- no loosely sewn beads, rhinestones or pompoms: check them by tugging gently;
- no pins to hold embroidery or a veil in place;
- no tight headband, especially for naps.
So give the jewellery in its box, or slip it into a keepsake box: it can be worn later, when the child is older.
Mum’s outfit: kaftan, takchita or gandoura after the birth
On the seventh day, a new mum’s body is still changing fast: the tummy is still rounded, the breasts are full, the bleeding continues. Choose an outfit that fits the body you have now, not the one you had before pregnancy.
A loose cut. A straight kaftan or a gandoura in flowing fabric is perfect. The takchita, with its two layered pieces, is warmer and heavier: save it for winter or a short appearance.
A front opening. If you are breastfeeding, this is the number-one criterion. Kaftans buttoned down the front, with their little braided buttons, open easily; a dress that fastens at the back means undressing for every feed. A shawl or a nursing cover lets you feed baby in the living room if you wish. Our advice on finding a comfortable breastfeeding position helps too, especially when sitting on a low Moroccan banquette.
Breast pads and a suitable bra under the kaftan, and a change of clothes within reach in case of leaks.
Flat shoes. Legs are often swollen in the first days, and your balance is not quite back yet.
After a C-section: the belt can wait
After a caesarean, the scar is usually 10 to 20 cm long, just below the bikini line, the UK’s NHS explains. During recovery it advises loose, comfortable clothes and cotton underwear, and avoiding lifting anything heavier than your baby.
In practice, the mdamma, the traditional kaftan belt, should not press on your tummy. Wear it loose and higher up, under the bust, or not at all. Also avoid skirts and trousers with a tight elastic waistband. More recovery advice is in our article on recovering from a C-section.
Photos, gifts and after the celebration
The sbou3 outfit is often the star of the photos. Plan to take them early in the day, when baby is clean, fed and rested, then change them into something simpler for the rest of the celebration. Our newborn photo ideas suggest a few simple, safe poses.
Once the celebration is over, wash the outfit separately, store it in a cotton bag and add a label with the date. It may be worn by the next baby in the family, or find its place in a keepsake box alongside the first hand and footprints. That is often how family traditions are born.
Frequently asked questions
What size should I choose for baby’s sbou3 outfit?
On the seventh day, most babies are still wearing 1-month or even newborn size, but it all depends on their weight. If you buy before the birth, go for 1 month or 3 months: a slightly big outfit is fine, a too-small one squeezes the tummy and makes changes awkward. Check the foot length of the sleepsuit, which must not bend baby’s toes.
Can baby wear an identity bracelet or a bangle for the sbou3?
Better to wait. A bracelet, chain or bangle can come undone and become a small object baby puts in their mouth, or get caught. Quebec’s INSPQ and the American Academy of Pediatrics point out that small objects are a choking risk for young children. Give the jewellery in its box, to keep for later, or slip it into a keepsake box.
What should I wear for the sbou3 after a C-section?
A loose garment that does not touch the scar, which sits just below the bikini line. The NHS advises loose, comfortable clothes and cotton underwear during recovery. Avoid tight belts and wearing the mdamma (the kaftan belt) at tummy level: a straight kaftan or a gandoura, with a loose belt worn higher up, or no belt, works just as well.
Should baby wear a hat during the sbou3?
Indoors, usually not, unless it is cool. A ceremony bonnet makes lovely photos, but a room full of people warms up fast. The INSPQ advises preventing baby from sweating and touching the back of their neck, which should not feel clammy. Put the hat on for the photos, then take it off.
