Quick answer: a correctly installed car seat barely moves at its base. It is secured either with Isofix plus its anti-rotation device (top tether or support leg), or with the 3-point seat belt routed through the colour-coded guides, and the harness is tight enough that you cannot pinch the strap at the shoulder. A rear-facing seat never goes in front of an active front airbag, and in Morocco children under 10 travel in the back.

A premium seat that is badly fitted protects less than a simple seat fitted well. In our Maârif showroom we see the same mistakes every week: a loose harness, a forgotten top tether, a belt in the wrong guide. Here is the right method, and how the Maxi-Cosi and Bébé Confort seats we stock are installed according to their official product information. Your seat's manual and your car's handbook always come first.

Isofix or seat belt: two ways to secure the seat

Isofix installation

Isofix means two metal anchor points fixed to the car's chassis, between the backrest and the cushion of the rear seat. The car seat clicks onto them; an indicator usually turns from red to green when it is locked correctly. Isofix alone is not enough: a third anti-rotation point stops the seat from tipping forward in a crash.

  • Top tether: a strap that runs from the top of the seat, over the vehicle seat and clips to the anchor point provided by the car maker. Never to a luggage hook or the headrest, which are not strong enough according to RoSPA, the UK accident-prevention charity.
  • Support leg: an adjustable foot that must rest firmly on the floor without lifting the seat, and never above an underfloor storage compartment.

3-point seat belt installation

This is the universal option, handy if you often switch cars (grandparents, rental, taxi). The belt goes through all the guides: blue for a rear-facing R44 seat, red for a forward-facing R44 seat, green for an i-Size (R129) seat. Press your weight into the seat while tightening the belt so there is no slack. The metal part of the buckle must not rest on the seat's frame, and a 2-point (lap-only) belt is not suitable.

Our advice: if your car has Isofix, use it, because it reduces fitting errors; otherwise an approved seat fitted firmly with the belt is still a good solution. Our car seat buying guide explains the R44 and R129 standards.

Pebble S and Citi infant carriers

The Maxi-Cosi Pebble S 2 184 DHSee price / Order is installed rear-facing only, with the 3-point belt or on the FamilyFix S Isofix base. Maxi-Cosi says never to place it in an airbag deployment zone and to remove the newborn insert above 60 cm. The Maxi-Cosi Citi 737 DHSee price / Order (group 0+, up to 13 kg) is fitted with the belt and does not fit any base: the simplest option for taxis or the grandparents' car.

The Demeter 360 i-Size rotating seat

The Bébé Confort Demeter 360 i-Size 2 266 DHSee price / Order is fitted with Isofix and a top tether. It is used rear-facing from 40 to 105 cm, forward-facing with harness from 76 to 105 cm (from 15 months), then as a booster with the belt from 100 to 150 cm. Turning it towards the door lets you buckle your child in face to face, without twisting your back.

Titan S i-Size and Titan Pro convertible seats

The Maxi-Cosi Titan S i-Size 3 436 DHSee price / Order is a forward-facing seat from 15 months. In harness mode (76 to 105 cm, 18 kg maximum) it is fitted with Isofix and top tether: according to its product information, the connectors alone are not enough. From 100 cm it becomes a booster used with the 3-point belt, guided by the green markers. Tip from the manual: set it to full recline before clicking it in. The Maxi-Cosi Titan Pro 5 490 DHSee price / Order (5 490 DH) is also fitted with Isofix and top tether in harness mode; exact ranges are on its product page.

RodiFix AirProtect and Gaia boosters

The Maxi-Cosi RodiFix AirProtect 2 790 DHSee price / Order clicks onto Isofix, then the child is secured with the car's belt. Bébé Confort's backless boosters (from 125 cm) come as the Gaia i-Fix 537 DHSee price / Order with Isofix, also in Spiderman 590 DHSee price / Order, and the Gaia i-Safe 273 DHSee price / Order (273 DH), secured by the belt alone.

The harness: buckling your child in properly

  1. Strap height: rear-facing, at or just below the shoulders; forward-facing, at or just above, according to NHTSA, the US road safety agency.
  2. The pinch test: with your child buckled in, try to pinch the strap at the shoulder between thumb and forefinger. If you can grab a fold, tighten. Maxi-Cosi recommends leaving no more than one finger's width (about 1 cm) between strap and child.
  3. Flat straps, no twists, buckle fully clicked.

Take off puffer jackets and thick coats: they compress in a crash and leave slack in the harness. Put a blanket over the straps instead. In summer, touch the buckles before seating your child: in full sun, the metal heats up quickly.

Passenger airbag and front seat: the rule to know

A rear-facing seat must never be installed in front of an active front airbag: when it deploys, the airbag strikes the back of the seat, right behind the baby's head. RoSPA stresses this, and Maxi-Cosi states it in the Pebble S manual.

In Morocco, decree no. 2-10-420 (article 8) states that children under ten must not occupy the front seats of private cars: install the seat in the back. For older children asking to sit in front, read our article booster seats and the front seat: the law in Morocco.

The most common installation mistakes

  • The seat moves at its base: pulled at the belt path or connectors, it should not move more than 2 to 3 cm (one inch, or 2.5 cm, for NHTSA).
  • A forgotten or loose top tether, or a support leg not touching the floor.
  • A loose harness or thick clothing under the straps.
  • The belt in the wrong guide or twisted.
  • A rear-facing seat in front of an active airbag.
  • Turning forward-facing too early: see rear-facing car seat: until what age?
  • Loose objects (bottle, tablet) that become projectiles under hard braking.

Check compatibility with your car

  1. Your car's handbook: Isofix or i-Size positions, top tether points, floor suitable for a support leg.
  2. The manufacturer's vehicle fitting list: Maxi-Cosi and Bébé Confort publish them. Maxi-Cosi notes, for example, that the Titan S may not fit every car for a child of 135 to 150 cm.
  3. Space: a rear-facing seat takes room; in a small car, check that the front passenger is still comfortable.
  4. A trial fit: bring your car to our Maârif showroom, or send us its make, model and year on WhatsApp.

Before a long journey (Casablanca–Marrakech, holidays, Eid with the family), repeat the checks: a seat moved to load luggage is often refitted in a hurry. Also read: baby in the car: heat and long journeys, which car seat by age and height and our Maxi-Cosi and Bébé Confort comparison.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my car seat is installed correctly?

Isofix indicators on green or the belt tight in the right guides, top tether or support leg in place, less than 2 to 3 cm of movement at the base, straps at the right height and a passed pinch test.

Isofix or seat belt: which is safer?

Both are approved. Isofix reduces fitting mistakes, so use it if your car has it; a seat fitted firmly with a 3-point belt is still valid.

What is a top tether?

A strap linking the top of the seat to an anchor in the car to stop it tipping forward. On the Demeter 360 i-Size and the Titan S i-Size in harness mode, it is part of the installation.

How do I do the pinch test?

Tighten the harness, then try to pinch the strap at the shoulder between thumb and forefinger. If a fold forms, tighten again.

Can I put an infant carrier in the front seat?

Never in front of an active front airbag. In Morocco, decree no. 2-10-420 (art. 8) states that under-10s must not occupy the front seats: fit it in the back.

My car has no Isofix: which seat should I choose?

A seat fitted with the 3-point belt: the Maxi-Cosi Citi or Pebble S for babies, the Gaia i-Safe booster for older children. The Demeter 360 and Titan S need Isofix in harness mode.

How do I install the Maxi-Cosi Pebble S?

Rear-facing only, with the 3-point belt or on the FamilyFix S Isofix base sold separately, never in front of an active airbag.

How do I install the Bébé Confort Demeter 360 i-Size?

Click the base onto Isofix, tighten the top tether, check the indicators, then turn the seat towards the door to buckle your child in. Rear-facing up to 105 cm.

Can you help me install my car seat in Casablanca?

Yes: visit our Maârif showroom, Monday to Saturday from 9:30 am to 8 pm, or message us on WhatsApp at +212 6 62 80 07 15.
