Quick answer: never leave a child alone in a car, even for a few minutes, even in the shade: according to NHTSA, the inside of a car can heat up by about 11 °C (20 °F) in 10 minutes, and a child's body temperature rises three to five times faster than an adult's. On a long journey, take your baby out of the seat about every 2 hours (the advice of Maxi-Cosi and the Walloon road safety agency), dress them lightly and check the back of their neck. Under 6 months, an exclusively breastfed baby does not need water, even in hot weather according to UNICEF: offer the breast more often. As for equipment, a light infant carrier like the Maxi-Cosi Pebble S 2 184 DHSee price / Order and a reclining rotating seat like the Bébé Confort Demeter 360 i-Size 2 266 DHSee price / Order make summer trips easier.

Casablanca–Marrakech in July, Fez–Tangier for Eid, Agadir in August: the Moroccan summer combines strong heat with long hours on the road. Here are the rules we remind parents of at our Maârif showroom, checked against official bodies and manufacturers. To choose the seat itself, see our baby car seat buying guide.

Rule no. 1: never leave a child alone in the car

A car parked in the sun becomes an oven within minutes. The figures from the US road safety agency (NHTSA) are clear:

  • the inside of a car can heat up by about 11 °C (20 °F) in 10 minutes;
  • rolling down the windows or parking in the shade does little to change the interior temperature;
  • a child's body temperature rises three to five times faster than an adult's, and heatstroke begins at a body temperature of about 40 °C.

Good habits: check the back seat every time you get out of the car; put your bag or phone in the back, next to the car seat; lock the car and keep the keys out of reach, so a child can't get locked in while playing. If you see a child alone in a car, call for help immediately (19 for the police, 15 for civil protection, 177 for the gendarmerie).

Before you leave: getting the car and seat ready for the heat

  • Cool the car down for a few minutes with the air conditioning before putting your child in.
  • Touch the buckles and the cover: metal and dark fabrics heat up in the sun. When parked, cover the empty seat with a light-coloured towel.
  • Fit sunshades on the rear side windows, without blocking the driver's view. Maxi-Cosi suggests bringing one on long trips.
  • Dress your baby lightly: a cotton bodysuit is often enough. Maxi-Cosi recommends removing hats and bulky clothing in the car and, if needed, laying a light blanket over the harness that is easy to remove.
  • Covers: choose a removable, washable cover, and check on the product page whether it is machine washable. Beware of trade names: "AirProtect", on the Maxi-Cosi RodiFix AirProtect 2 790 DHSee price / Order, is side-impact protection built into the headrest, not a breathable fabric.
  • Check the installation before leaving: no slack in the harness, straps at the right height, seat moving no more than 2–3 cm. Our article installing a car seat: common mistakes covers each point.

Never add an accessory not supplied by the manufacturer between your child and the harness (cushion, insert from another brand): it may change how the seat holds the child in a crash.

On the road: a break about every 2 hours

For a young baby, manufacturers and safety bodies give the same advice: no more than 2 hours at a time in the car seat, then a break out of the seat.

  • Maxi-Cosi states that babies should stay in their car seat for no more than two hours at a time, advises keeping journeys with a newborn as short as possible and taking regular breaks even if your baby is sleeping.
  • The AWSR (Walloon road safety agency) recommends stopping about every 2 hours so the child can get out and move.

In practice, on the Casablanca–Marrakech motorway, plan at least one proper break at a rest area; on Casablanca–Agadir or Rabat–Tangier, several. Use it to change and feed your baby in the shade, never taking them out of the seat while the car is moving. On arrival, Maxi-Cosi and the NHS remind parents that a baby asleep in the carrier should be moved to a firm, flat surface: the carrier is made for the road, not for naps.

Hydration and signs your baby is too hot

  • Under 6 months, exclusively breastfed: according to UNICEF, babies do not need water before 6 months, even in a hot climate; breast milk is more than 80% water. Offer the breast more often during breaks.
  • Formula-fed baby: ask your paediatrician how to adapt bottles in summer, and bring what you need to prepare them during breaks.
  • After 6 months and for older children: keep a water bottle within reach, in a Jovikids car seat organiser 180 DHSee price / Order (180 DH) hung on the front seat back.
  • Check their temperature: feel the back of the neck or the tummy. If the skin is clammy or sweaty, your baby is too hot: remove a layer of clothing (NHS advice).

A baby who is unusually drowsy, very hot, vomiting or refusing to drink should be taken out of the car, cooled in the shade and seen by a doctor without delay.

Eid and holiday journeys: the checklist

Before every Eid, NARSA (Morocco's national road safety agency) reminds drivers to rest enough before setting off, not to drive tired, that children under 10 must sit in the back seats and that seat belts are compulsory for all passengers, front and rear.

  1. Leave early in the morning or in the evening to avoid the hottest hours.
  2. A seat suited to each child's height, installed in the back; see which car seat by age and height.
  3. Nothing loose in the car: bottles, tablets and hard toys become projectiles under braking. Store them in the organiser.
  4. Protect the vehicle seat under an Isofix seat with the Jovikids back seat protector 150 DHSee price / Order (150 DH).
  5. Taxi or rental car: a belt-fitted carrier like the Maxi-Cosi Citi 737 DHSee price / Order or a light booster like the Bébé Confort Gaia i-Safe 273 DHSee price / Order (from 125 cm) are easy to take along; check that the rear seat has a working 3-point seat belt. The booster still belongs in the back: see booster seats and the front seat in Morocco.
  6. Breaks every 2 hours, a rested driver, cool water on board.

Frequently asked questions

How long can a baby stay in a car seat?

The general recommendation, shared by Maxi-Cosi and the NHS, is no more than 2 hours at a time, with regular breaks out of the seat, even if the baby is asleep. With a newborn, keep journeys as short as possible.

Can I leave my baby in the car for two minutes with the window open?

No. According to NHTSA, opening the windows does little to change the interior temperature, which can rise by about 11 °C in 10 minutes, and a child heats up three to five times faster than an adult.

Should I give water to a baby under 6 months in hot weather?

An exclusively breastfed baby does not need water before 6 months, even in a hot climate, according to UNICEF: offer the breast more often. For a formula-fed baby, ask your paediatrician.

How should I dress my baby in the car in summer?

Lightly: a cotton bodysuit, no hat or bulky clothing under the harness. Feel the neck or tummy; if clammy, remove a layer.

Can my baby sleep in the car seat during the journey?

Yes, during the journey. On arrival, move them to a firm, flat surface; the carrier is not a bed.

Does Maxi-Cosi's AirProtect technology keep my child cool?

No. AirProtect is side-impact protection built into the headrest of the RodiFix AirProtect; it has nothing to do with ventilation. For how breathable a cover is, check the product page.

Which car seat for a Casablanca–Marrakech trip with a baby?

A rear-facing carrier like the Maxi-Cosi Pebble S or Citi, or the reclining Bébé Confort Demeter 360 i-Size. Plan at least one break out of the seat.

Can I take a taxi with a baby in Morocco?

Bring a belt-fitted carrier like the Maxi-Cosi Citi and install it in the back, on a seat with a working 3-point belt. Children under 10 must not sit in the front.

Are car window sunshades useful?

Yes, on the rear side windows, to limit direct sun on your child; they must not block the driver's view. They don't replace air conditioning or breaks.

Can you deliver a car seat before Eid or the holidays?

We deliver anywhere in Morocco, usually within 24 to 48 hours depending on the city (a guide only, never guaranteed): order a few days before you leave, or pick up your seat for free at our Maârif showroom.
