Quick answer: move to a booster seat when your child reaches the height or weight limit of their harnessed seat (often 100–105 cm or 15–18 kg, around age 4). Start with a high-back booster, designed for roughly 100 to 150 cm, and only switch to a backless booster from 125 cm (R129 standard). Keep it until the adult belt sits on the upper thighs and across the middle of the shoulder on its own. In Morocco, Decree No. 2-10-420 (Article 8) bans children under 10 from the front seats of private cars: the booster goes in the back.

"He no longer fits in his seat, what do we buy?", "Can she sit in the front?", "What about the petit taxi?": here are our answers, based on the official texts and the Bébé Confort and Maxi-Cosi boosters we have in stock. For the big picture, see our baby car seat buying guide.

When should your child move to a booster seat?

Height decides, not age. As long as your child is within the limits of their harnessed seat (shown on the label and in the manual), keep the harness: it holds them better than an adult belt. The booster comes when they outgrow those limits, often around 100–105 cm or 15–18 kg, so around age 4.

Some seats already cover stages 1 and 2: the Bébé Confort Demeter 360 i-Size rotating seat 2 266 DHSee price / Order (2 266 DH) is used with its harness up to 105 cm, then as a booster with the belt from 100 to 150 cm; the Maxi-Cosi Titan S i-Size 3 436 DHSee price / Order (3 436 DH) covers 76 to 150 cm, harness then belt. High-back or backless booster: which one?

Both raise the child so the belt sits in the right place; the backrest also guides the shoulder belt, supports the head when the child falls asleep and adds side protection.

High-back: the right choice from age 4

The Maxi-Cosi RodiFix AirProtect group 2/3 car seat 2 790 DHSee price / Order (2 790 DH) is designed for 15 to 36 kg, about 3.5 to 12 years according to Maxi-Cosi. It attaches to the Isofix anchorages, its headrest adjusts in height, it offers two recline positions and side protection. According to the manufacturer, its AirProtect technology reduces the risk of head injury by up to 20%.

Backless: from 125 cm only

Under R129, backless boosters are reserved for children at least 125 cm tall. Light and compact, they are ideal for a second car, car-pooling or taxis.

Our rule: under 125 cm, a high-back booster; the backless one comes next, or as an extra for occasional trips. The full range is in our car booster seats department.

A well-fitted belt: the test before going without

According to the US road safety agency NHTSA, the lap belt must lie flat across the upper thighs, not the stomach, and the shoulder belt across the shoulder and chest, without touching the neck or face. Do this test in the car, without the booster:

  1. The child sits all the way back, with their back against the seat back.
  2. Their knees bend naturally at the edge of the seat.
  3. The lap belt lies on the upper thighs, not the stomach.
  4. The shoulder belt crosses the middle of the shoulder, not the neck; never under the arm or behind the back.
  5. They can stay like this for the whole journey, even asleep.

A single "no" and the booster stays, up to 150 cm if needed, the upper limit of R129 boosters. NHTSA also recommends keeping children in the back seat at least through age 12.

Children in the front seat: what Moroccan law says

Decree No. 2-10-420 on road traffic rules (Law 52-05) states in Article 8 that "children under ten years of age must not occupy the front seats of private motor vehicles". Article 7 requires the driver and front passenger to wear a seat belt in built-up areas, and all occupants outside built-up areas.

  • Under 10: no front seat in a private car, even for a short trip, even on a booster.
  • Type of seat: the text we consulted does not specify a seat or booster by age, so we cannot claim a booster is legally required. It is, however, the safety recommendation, because an adult belt is not designed for a small body.
  • From age 10: Article 8 no longer bans the front seat, but the back remains more protective; if your child rides in front, push the seat back and follow the car manual regarding the passenger airbag.

For any question on how the code is applied, ask the authorities or NARSA (National Road Safety Agency).

Taxis, car-pooling and long journeys in Morocco

Article 8 covers "private motor vehicles" and does not mention taxis. But a crash is a crash: in a petit taxi or a grand taxi, the best place for a child is in the back, with their own belt.

  • Take a light booster: the Gaia i-Safe 273 DHSee price / Order is secured with the belt and slips into a bag. It is used with a 3-point belt: check it before setting off, and never use it with a lap-only belt.
  • Car-pooling and grandparents: a second booster (Gaia i-Safe or Yoho) saves you removing the main seat every morning.
  • Casablanca–Marrakech, Eid return trips: take a break about every two hours; the backrest of the RodiFix AirProtect 2 790 DHSee price / Order supports a sleeping child's head.
  • Heat: touch the buckle and the seat before sitting your child down; see baby in the car: heat and long journeys.

Common booster seat mistakes

  • Switching to backless too early, before 125 cm.
  • Belt under the arm or behind the back because it rubs the neck: a sign the child needs a backrest or the headrest needs adjusting.
  • Belt routed wrongly through the guides: follow the colour markings in the manual.
  • Empty booster left unsecured: under braking it becomes a projectile. Buckle the belt over it or choose an Isofix model (Gaia i-Fix, RodiFix AirProtect).
  • Car headrest too low with a backless booster: adjust it to the height of the child's head.
  • Thick coat: it holds the belt away from the body.

Frequently asked questions

At what age should a child use a booster seat?

Around age 4 on average, but height and weight decide: when the child outgrows the limit of their harnessed seat (often 100–105 cm or 15–18 kg). Start with a high-back booster.

How tall must a child be for a backless booster?

At least 125 cm under the R129 standard. The Bébé Confort Gaia i-Safe and Gaia i-Fix are approved from 125 to 150 cm.

High-back or backless booster: which is safer?

The backrest guides the belt, supports the head and protects the sides: keep it as long as possible, especially for long trips. A backless booster is suitable from 125 cm.

At what age can a child sit in the front seat in Morocco?

Decree No. 2-10-420 (Article 8) bans children under 10 from the front seats of private cars. After 10, the back seat is still the most protective place.

Is a booster seat compulsory in Morocco?

The text we consulted bans under-10s from the front and requires seat belts, without specifying a type of seat by age. It is, however, the safety recommendation as long as the belt does not fit correctly on its own.

Can you use a booster seat in a taxi?

Yes, if the back seat has a working 3-point belt. A light belt-secured model such as the Gaia i-Safe is easy to carry.

What is the difference between the Gaia i-Safe and the Gaia i-Fix?

Both are R129 backless boosters for 125 to 150 cm. The i-Safe is secured with the belt; the i-Fix adds Isofix connectors that hold it in place, even when empty.

Is an Isofix booster safer?

It is the car's belt that restrains the child. Isofix stabilises the booster and stops it being thrown around when empty.

How long should a child use a booster?

Until the belt fits correctly without it for the whole journey; R129 boosters are designed for up to 150 cm.

How much does a car booster seat cost in Morocco?

At our store, from 156 DH (Yoho) to 2 790 DH (RodiFix AirProtect), with the Gaia i-Safe at 273 DH and the Gaia i-Fix at 537 DH. Delivery anywhere in Morocco.
