Key points

  • Birth to 12–15 months: a rear-facing i-Size infant carrier.
  • Rear-facing until at least 15 months, ideally up to the seat's limit.
  • A 360° rotating seat for comfort; a 76–150 cm convertible lasts until age 12.
  • High-back booster around age 4; backless only from 125 cm.
  • Isofix reduces mistakes, but a seat properly fitted with the belt is still valid.
  • In Morocco, no child under 10 in the front (Decree 2-10-420, Art. 8).
  • Never leave a child alone in a car, especially in summer.

Quick answer: from birth to about 12–15 months, choose an i-Size infant carrier installed rear-facing (40 to 83–87 cm depending on the model), then keep your child rear-facing for as long as possible, at least until 15 months, in a convertible or rotating seat. Around age 4, move to a high-back booster with the car's seat belt; a backless booster only from 125 cm. In Morocco, expect about 1,000 to 2,400 DH for an infant carrier, 1,500 to 2,500 DH for a 360° rotating seat and from 200 DH for a booster. Our benchmarks: the Maxi-Cosi Pebble S 2 184 DHSee price / Order infant carrier, the Bébé Confort Demeter 360 i-Size 2 266 DHSee price / Order rotating seat and the Gaia i-Fix 537 DHSee price / Order booster, with the full range in our car seat department.

Which standard, which age, Isofix or seat belt, rotating or not? This guide brings together the answers we give parents every day in our Maârif store, with figures checked against official texts and manufacturers.

Which car seat for which age and height?

A child changes car seat three or four times before age 10–12. Think in height (cm) rather than age: that is how the i-Size standard (R129) works.

StageIndicative height / weightApproximate ageSeat typeDirection
1. Newborn40 to 75–87 cm (or 0–13 kg under R44, group 0+)Birth to 12–15 monthsInfant carrierRear-facing
2. ToddlerUp to 105 cm (or 9–18 kg under R44, group 1)About 15 months to 4 yearsConvertible or 360° rotating harnessed seatRear-facing as long as possible, then forward-facing
3. Child100 to 150 cm (or 15–36 kg under R44, groups 2/3)About 4 to 12 yearsHigh-back boosterForward-facing
4. Older child125 to 150 cmFrom about 6–7 yearsBackless booster (R129)Forward-facing

Ages are only guides: what counts is the height range and maximum weight on the seat's label.

R44 or R129 (i-Size): understanding the standards

R44: seats classified by weight

ECE R44/04 classifies seats by weight group: group 0+ (up to 13 kg), group 1 (9–18 kg), group 2 (15–25 kg) and group 3 (22–36 kg). An approved R44 seat can still be used; in the European Union, however, its sale has been banned since 1 September 2024 according to Maxi-Cosi, in favour of R129.

R129 (i-Size): seats classified by height

UN Regulation No. 129, known as i-Size, works with the child's height (for example 40–87 cm or 100–150 cm), plus a maximum weight. Three major changes:

  • Rear-facing is mandatory until at least 15 months.
  • A side-impact test, absent from R44, to better protect the head and neck.
  • Simpler installation: i-Size harnessed seats attach with Isofix, which reduces fitting mistakes.

At a similar budget, choose the i-Size version. But a good R44 seat fitted correctly protects better than a badly fitted i-Size seat: installation matters as much as the standard. To check, look for the orange approval label on the shell: it shows "R129" or "ECE R44/04", the height or weight range and the installation type. Never buy a seat without this label.

What does the law say in Morocco?

Decree No. 2-10-420 on road traffic rules (Law 52-05) states in Article 8 that children under ten must not occupy the front seats of private motor vehicles. Article 7 requires the seat belt for the driver and front passenger in built-up areas, and for all occupants outside built-up areas. The text we consulted does not specify a seat model by age, but an adult belt is not designed for a small body: an approved seat suited to the child's height, in the back, remains the safety recommendation.

The infant carrier: for the first months

An infant carrier is a light shell seat with a handle, installed rear-facing. You can carry it from the car to the house without waking your baby, and many click onto a stroller. Depending on the model, it fits babies from 40 cm up to 75–87 cm, roughly 12 to 15 months.

To put a Maxi-Cosi carrier on a stroller from another brand, you often need a Maxi-Cosi Citi car seat adapter 179 DHSee price / Order or a model from our car seat adapters section: send us your stroller reference on WhatsApp and we will check compatibility. All our carriers are in the group 0+ infant carrier category. An infant carrier is designed for the car, not for hours of sleep: take regular breaks on the road.

Rear-facing: until when?

When rear-facing, the seat back spreads the forces of a frontal crash across the whole back and better protects the still-fragile head and neck. The i-Size standard requires it until at least 15 months, Maxi-Cosi recommends extending it to at least 2 years, and the US agency NHTSA advises staying rear-facing until the maximum height or weight allowed by the seat. Legs touching the vehicle seat are not a problem: the signal to turn around is the rear-facing height limit shown on the seat (105 cm for the Demeter 360 i-Size, for example).

The 360° rotating seat: everyday comfort

A rotating seat swivels on its base towards the door: you buckle your child in face to face, without twisting, then turn the seat back to rear- or forward-facing. A real plus when you lift a baby several times a day, especially in a small car or with a sore back after giving birth.

A "birth to 12 years" seat is economical, but an infant carrier remains more practical for a newborn you often take out of the car. Many families therefore combine a carrier, then a rotating or convertible seat.

Convertible seats: harness, then booster

If you do not need rotation, a convertible seat takes your child from about 15 months to 12 years: first with its harness, then as a high-back booster.

High-back and backless boosters

A booster raises the child so that the car's belt sits in the right place: across the hips (not the tummy) and across the middle of the shoulder (not the neck).

High-back (group 2/3, 100–150 cm)

The backrest guides the belt, supports the head when the child falls asleep and adds side protection: the preferred choice from around age 4. The Maxi-Cosi RodiFix AirProtect group 2/3 Authentic Black car seat 2 790 DHSee price / Order (2 790 DH) covers 15 to 36 kg (about 3.5 to 12 years), with Isofix connectors.

Backless (R129, 125–150 cm)

Under R129, backless boosters are reserved for children at least 125 cm tall. Light and compact, they suit car-pooling or the grandparents' car.

See our car booster section. Your child can stop using a booster when, sitting fully back, their knees bend at the edge of the seat and the belt stays across the upper thighs and mid-shoulder for the whole journey.

Isofix or seat belt: which to choose?

Isofix means two metal anchors fixed to the car's frame, between the backrest and the seat cushion, onto which the car seat clicks, with a green locking indicator and a third anti-rotation point (support leg or top tether strap). Benefits: quick installation and fewer mistakes. A 3-point seat belt is found in almost every car and is useful if you often change vehicles. To find out whether your car has Isofix, slide your hand between the rear backrest and cushion, look for "ISOFIX" tags or check the manual.

Check compatibility with your car

  1. Vehicle manual: Isofix or i-Size positions, top tether anchor, floor suitable for a support leg.
  2. The seat manufacturer's vehicle list for your car model (Maxi-Cosi, Chicco and Bébé Confort publish one).
  3. Available space: a rear-facing seat takes room; in a small car, check the front passenger's comfort.
  4. Try it: bring your car to our Maârif showroom for installation advice.

The most common installation mistakes

  • Harness too loose: you should not be able to pinch the strap at the shoulder; remove thick coats.
  • Shoulder straps at the wrong height: at or just below the shoulders rear-facing, at or just above forward-facing.
  • Seat that moves more than 2–3 cm at the base.
  • Belt routed incorrectly through the guides: follow the manufacturer's colour markings.
  • Rear-facing seat in front of an active airbag: forbidden and dangerous.
  • Moving on too early to forward-facing or to a backless booster.
  • Loose objects (tablet, bottle) that become projectiles: store them in an organiser.

Second-hand car seats: be careful

A seat that has been in an accident can be weakened without visible signs. Before accepting a second-hand seat, check its history, the approval label, the manual, the condition of the harness and buckles and that there are no cracks. If in doubt, choose a new seat, even an entry-level one.

Heat: car seats during the Moroccan summer

In summer, a car parked in the sun in Marrakech, Fès or Agadir heats up very fast, and according to NHTSA a child's body temperature rises three to five times faster than an adult's.

  • Never leave a child alone in a car, not even for a few minutes, not even in the shade.
  • Touch the buckles and cover before seating your child; cover the seat with a light-coloured towel when parked.
  • Use sun shades and choose breathable, removable, washable covers.
  • Give your child water and plan breaks in the shade.

Taxis, travel and long journeys

For Casablanca–Marrakech or Rabat–Tanger, take a break about every two hours. In a taxi or rental car, a belt-fitted carrier (Citi) or a light booster (Yoho, Gaia i-Safe) is easy to carry; check that the rear seat has a working 3-point belt. For a tidy car, consider the Jovikids car seat organiser 180 DHSee price / Order and the Jovikids back seat protector 150 DHSee price / Order, which protects upholstery under an Isofix seat.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best baby car seat in Morocco?

The best seat is the one that suits your child's height and your car. For a newborn: an i-Size carrier such as the Maxi-Cosi Pebble S or the Jovikids Aria; for a single rotating seat up to 12 years: the Bébé Confort Demeter 360 i-Size. Favour R129 and Isofix if your car has it.

Where can I buy a Maxi-Cosi car seat in Casablanca?

At La Maison du Bébé, 93 rue Brahim Nakhai, Maârif, Casablanca, Monday to Saturday from 9:30 am to 8 pm. Our Maxi-Cosi seats (Pebble S, Citi, Titan, RodiFix) are authentic, covered by the manufacturer's warranty and delivered anywhere in Morocco.

How much does a car seat cost in Morocco?

In our range: from about 200 DH for a backless booster, about 1,000 to 2,400 DH for an infant carrier, about 1,500 to 2,500 DH for a 360° rotating seat and about 2,800 to 5,500 DH for a premium convertible.

Until what age should a baby travel rear-facing?

At least until 15 months with an i-Size seat (R129). Maxi-Cosi recommends at least 2 years, and NHTSA advises staying rear-facing until the seat's height or weight limit.

Should I choose i-Size or R44?

At a similar budget, choose i-Size: height-based sizing, rear-facing until at least 15 months and a side-impact test. An approved, correctly fitted R44 seat can still be used.

Is Isofix mandatory?

No. An approved seat properly fitted with a 3-point belt is valid. Isofix makes installation simpler and reduces mistakes, if your car is equipped.

Is a rotating car seat really useful?

Yes if you buckle your child in often: turning towards the door avoids bending over and makes switching direction easy. That is the case with the Demeter 360 i-Size and the Jovikids Angela 360°.

When should my child use a booster seat?

A high-back booster around age 4, when the child outgrows the harness (often 100–105 cm or 15–18 kg). A backless R129 booster only from 125 cm.

Is a car seat mandatory in Morocco?

Decree No. 2-10-420 forbids children under 10 from the front seats of private cars (Art. 8) and requires seat belts for all occupants outside built-up areas (Art. 7). The text we consulted does not specify a seat type by age; a restraint suited to the child's height remains the safety recommendation.

Do you deliver anywhere in Morocco with cash on delivery?

Yes: delivery anywhere in Morocco, usually within 24 to 48 hours depending on the city (indicative), free from 300 DH, cash on delivery or card payment (CMI), or free pick-up at our Maârif showroom.

Can I exchange a seat that does not fit my car?

You have 7 days to exchange it, under the conditions of our Satisfied or refunded page. The easiest way: send us your car model on WhatsApp before ordering.
