Quick answer: for a doorway, a hallway or the bottom of the stairs, choose a pressure-fit auto-close gate such as the Safety 1st auto-close safety gate 475 DHSee price / Order (openings of 73 to 80 cm, widened with 7 or 14 cm extensions). At the top of the stairs, or for a wide opening up to 140 cm, choose a screw-fitted gate such as the Badabulle Safe & Roll retractable gate 628 DHSee price / Order. Once your child moves into a big bed, add a Safety 1st 90 cm bed rail 410 DHSee price / Order. In Morocco, budget from about 120 DH for an extension to about 1,200 DH for a wooden gate; the full range is in our baby safety gate aisle.

Safety gates are the best-selling product in our store, and that is no accident. As soon as a baby starts crawling and pulling up to stand, the stairs, the kitchen, the steps of a Moroccan living room or the way out to the terrace all need constant watching. A well-chosen, well-fitted gate gives you a few minutes to breathe, but it never replaces an adult's supervision. This guide brings together what we explain to parents every day in our Maârif showroom: which type to choose, how to measure, where to fit it, which mistakes to avoid and how much to spend.

The different types of baby safety gates

Before looking at models, two things matter: how the gate holds (pressure or screws) and how it opens (a standard door, an auto-closing door or a fabric screen that rolls away). The right choice depends on the spot you need to protect, not on the brand.

Pressure-fit gates (no drilling)

These gates hold thanks to four spindles that you tighten against the walls or door frame until the gate is firmly wedged. No holes are needed, which makes them the favourite of families who rent. The Safety 1st auto-close gate 475 DHSee price / Order works this way: according to the manufacturer's manual, it fits openings of 73 to 80 cm and must never be used without its wall cups. Its weak point is the U-shaped bar on the floor, which an adult can trip over. That is why pressure gates belong in doorways, hallways, kitchens and at the bottom of the stairs.

Screw-fitted gates (wall-mounted)

These are fixed to the wall or the banister post with screws and brackets. You have to drill, but in return they stand up better to a growing child pushing on them. This is the type recommended for the top of the stairs by the British consumer organisation Which? and by KidsHealth (Nemours). The Badabulle Deco Pop wooden gate 1 083 DHSee price / Order accepts both fittings, screwed or pressure, for openings of 63 to 106 cm according to its product sheet. Screwed, it swings open like a small gate; pressure-fitted, you lift it out completely to get through.

Auto-close gates

On an auto-close gate, the door swings shut and locks by itself when you let go. It is the most useful comfort feature day to day: you walk through carrying a tray, a laundry basket or the baby, and the gate is never left open by mistake, which happens quickly when older siblings, the nanny or grandparents move around the house. Our best seller, the white Safety 1st auto-close gate, works on this principle.

Retractable gates

A mesh screen rolls into a housing fixed to the wall, a bit like a blind. Once rolled away it takes up no space and leaves nothing on the floor, which suits living rooms and entrances. The Badabulle Safe & Roll retractable gate 628 DHSee price / Order extends up to 140 cm, is screw-mounted (brackets included) and has a double locking system, according to the brand description used by its retailers. The retailer Babyartikel states that it can be installed at the top of the stairs. It is our usual answer for wide openings.

Extensions

An extension is a panel that attaches to the side of a gate to cover an opening wider than its original range. Extensions are specific to each brand and range: a Safety 1st extension will not fit a Badabulle gate, and vice versa. For the Safety 1st auto-close gate, the manual lists 7, 14 and 28 cm extensions, up to 136 cm in total. We stock the Safety 1st 7 cm extension 78 DHSee price / Order and the Safety 1st 14 cm extension 163 DHSee price / Order. The Badabulle Safe and Lock 7 cm 138 DHSee price / Order and Safe and Lock 18 cm 252 DHSee price / Order extensions are designed only for the brand's Safe & Lock gates, and the Safety 1st Modular 72 cm extension 790 DHSee price / Order for the Safety 1st modular gate: they are mainly for parents who already own those models.

Bed rails

A bed rail slides under the mattress to keep a child from rolling out at night once they leave the cot for a "big" bed. We offer the Safety 1st 90 cm bed rail 410 DHSee price / Order, which folds down to make bedtime easier, and the Safety 1st portable bed rail 610 DHSee price / Order, which folds away for holidays or nights at the grandparents'. According to the product sheet of the portable version, it is for children from 18 months to 5 years, adjusts from 71 to 106 cm in length and suits mattresses 10 to 23 cm thick. You will find them in our bed rail aisle.

How to measure the opening (and know whether you need an extension)

Half of the returns we see come from a rough measurement. Take five minutes and a tape measure before you order:

  1. Measure the width at three heights: bottom, middle and top of the opening, wall to wall (or wall to post). Walls are not always perfectly straight; keep the smallest figure, because that is where the spindles will press.
  2. Compare with the manufacturer's range: 73 to 80 cm for the Safety 1st auto-close gate, 63 to 106 cm for the Badabulle Deco Pop, up to 140 cm for the Safe & Roll. If your measurement falls within the range, you need no extension.
  3. Work out the gap if you are over: for an 85 cm doorway you are about 5 cm over 80 cm, so a 7 cm extension is usually enough; for an opening of about 92 cm you will rather need the 14 cm extension. Several extensions can be combined in the configurations listed in the manual.
  4. Check the bearing surfaces: a pressure gate needs two solid, flat and roughly parallel surfaces. A thick skirting board, a radiator, a light switch or a wrought-iron banister can stop it from tightening properly.
  5. At the top of the stairs, measure at landing level: the Safety 1st manual states that the gate must not be positioned below the top level of the stairs.
  6. Send us your measurements and a photo of the opening on WhatsApp: we will check the model and number of extensions with you before you buy.

Top or bottom of the stairs: the rule to remember

This is the question we hear most, and the answer fits in one sentence: screw-fitted at the top of the stairs; at the bottom, a pressure gate can be enough.

  • Bottom of the stairs: a pressure gate is fine. The Safety 1st manual recommends placing it in front of the lowest possible step so the child cannot start climbing behind it.
  • Top of the stairs: Which? advises using screw-fit gates only, partly because the floor bar of a pressure gate can trip an adult going down. The gate should open towards the landing, never out over the steps. KidsHealth also points out that a pressure gate can give way if a child pushes hard.
  • Busy staircase: ideally protect both ends, a screw-fitted gate at the top and a pressure gate at the bottom.

In our range, the Badabulle Safe & Roll 628 DHSee price / Order and the screw-fitted Badabulle Deco Pop 1 083 DHSee price / Order are the options to look at for the top of the stairs; the Safety 1st auto-close gate 475 DHSee price / Order is made for the bottom of the stairs and doorways.

Safety gates in Morocco: typical situations in our homes

Moroccan homes have their own features, and they change the choice of gate. Here are the situations we come across most often in the store.

Rented apartment

Can't drill into the landlord's walls? A pressure gate is made for you, between two walls or in a door frame. If the apartment has an inside staircase (duplex), use pressure only at the bottom; the top still needs a screw fitting, even if that means filling the holes when you move out.

Villa, family house or riad with stairs

Concrete stairs with wrought-iron railings, rounded balusters or staircases open onto a patio do not always offer two flat surfaces to tighten a gate against. In that case the gate is screwed to the wall and to the post, or you choose a retractable model whose housing screws into the wall. Send us a photo: every staircase is different.

Marble, zellige or tiled walls

Drilling into marble or zellige is tricky and leaves marks. For a doorway or the bottom of the stairs, a pressure gate avoids drilling. For a screw fitting on these materials, call a tradesman with the right drill bit, or fix the gate to a wooden or concrete section.

Wide openings: living room, double doors, open kitchen

Moroccan living rooms and open kitchens are often more than a metre wide. Two solutions: the Safe & Roll retractable gate 628 DHSee price / Order up to 140 cm, or the Safety 1st auto-close gate with extensions, up to 136 cm in total according to the manual. Beyond that, it is better to close off another, narrower doorway.

Windows, balconies and terraces

An indoor gate is not designed to secure a window: the Safety 1st manual forbids fitting it across a window, and these gates are intended for domestic use. Windows and balconies need dedicated devices and, above all, a child should never be left alone there.

Standards: what to check before buying

In Europe, child safety gates are covered by the EN 1930:2011 standard ("Child use and care articles – Safety barriers – Safety requirements and test methods"), which applies to domestic barriers for children up to 24 months. It sets requirements on strength, gaps where a child could get trapped and the locking system. The manual of the Safety 1st auto-close gate and the product sheet of the Badabulle Deco Pop both mention this standard, and Which? also tests against EN 1930:2011.

Bed rails are not covered by EN 1930. As far as we know, there is no published European standard specific to them yet: a draft (prEN 18102, bed guards for children aged 18 months to 4 years) has been studied at CEN without being published so far. For a bed rail, follow the manual to the letter: age, mattress thickness and type of bed base.

A standard means the model has passed laboratory tests; it replaces neither correct installation nor adult supervision. Be wary of unbranded gates with no manual sold on social media, and of old diamond-pattern "accordion" gates, which KidsHealth advises against because a child's head can get caught in them.

Installation mistakes to avoid

  1. Putting a pressure gate at the top of the stairs. It is the most common mistake and the most dangerous. At the top, you screw.
  2. Using the gate without its wall cups or not tight enough. Check the tension regularly: with constant use, the spindles can loosen.
  3. Mixing extensions from another brand or fitting them in an unplanned configuration. The Safety 1st manual is clear: use extensions only in the configurations recommended by the manufacturer.
  4. Leaving something to climb on next to the gate: a toy, a pouf, a cushion or a stool. KidsHealth notes that children quickly use them to get over.
  5. Fitting the gate across a window, which the manuals forbid.
  6. Propping the door open "just for the day". An open gate protects nothing; that is the whole point of auto-close.
  7. Using it for too long: once the child can open it or climb it, it becomes an extra fall risk.

From what age, and until when?

Fit the gate before your baby gets moving, ideally around 6 months when crawling starts. KidsHealth says safety gates are intended for children from about 6 months to 2 years, and the manual of the Safety 1st auto-close gate mentions use up to 24 months.

The real signal to stop is behaviour, not age: remove the gate as soon as your child can open it or starts climbing it. KidsHealth also advises that the gate should be at least three-quarters of the child's height.

The bed rail takes over later, when the child moves from the cot to a big bed, often between 18 months and 3 years. The product sheet of the Safety 1st portable bed rail gives an age range of 18 months to 5 years, only for a child who can get out of bed alone.

How much should you budget for a safety gate in Morocco?

  • Small budget (about 120 to 450 DH): extensions to adapt an existing gate, and the Safety 1st 90 cm bed rail for the move to a big bed.
  • Mid-range (about 650 to 800 DH): the Safety 1st auto-close gate, the Badabulle Safe & Roll retractable gate, the portable bed rail and the 72 cm modular extension.
  • Premium (about 1,200 DH): the Badabulle Deco Pop wooden gate, for those who want a gate that blends into the decor.

Think about the total: gate plus extension(s). A doorway of about 90 cm fitted with the auto-close gate usually needs a 14 cm extension on top. All our gates are above the 300 DH threshold, so delivery is free anywhere in Morocco.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best stair gate in Morocco?

It depends on the spot. At the top of the stairs, choose a screw-fitted gate such as the Badabulle Safe & Roll or the screw-fitted Badabulle Deco Pop. At the bottom, a pressure gate such as the Safety 1st auto-close, our best seller, works well and avoids drilling.

Where can I buy a baby safety gate in Casablanca?

At La Maison du Bébé, 93 rue Brahim Nakhai, Maârif, Casablanca, Monday to Saturday from 9:30 am to 8:00 pm. You can see the gates in store, order online and collect free of charge at the showroom, or have them delivered.

How much does a baby safety gate cost in Morocco?

With us, from about 120 DH for an extension to about 1,200 DH for a wooden gate. Our best seller, the Safety 1st auto-close gate, is 475 DH, and the Safety 1st 90 cm bed rail is 410 DH.

Pressure-fit or screw-fit: which should I choose?

A pressure gate installs without drilling and suits doorways, hallways and the bottom of the stairs. A screw-fit gate needs drilling but holds better: according to Which? and KidsHealth, it is the only kind to use at the top of the stairs.

How do I measure for a safety gate?

Measure the width wall to wall at the bottom, middle and top of the opening and keep the smallest figure. Compare it with the manufacturer's range (73 to 80 cm for the Safety 1st auto-close); beyond that, you need an extension from the same brand.

Do I need an extension for my gate?

Only if your opening is wider than the gate's maximum width. For the Safety 1st auto-close, above 80 cm add a 7 or 14 cm extension; the manual allows up to 136 cm in total. Extensions from another brand are not compatible.

Until what age should I use a safety gate?

Gates are intended for children from about 6 months to 2 years; the Safety 1st auto-close manual states use up to 24 months. Remove it as soon as your child can open it or starts climbing it.

Do you deliver safety gates to Rabat, Marrakech or Tangier?

Yes, we deliver anywhere in Morocco: by our team in Casablanca and by Amana to Rabat, Marrakech, Tangier, Fez, Agadir, Meknes, Oujda, Kenitra, Tetouan, El Jadida and elsewhere. Delivery usually takes 24 to 48 hours depending on the city, as an indication only, and is free from 300 DH.

Can I pay for my gate on delivery?

Yes. You can pay cash on delivery, or online by secure bank card (CMI).

Can I install a safety gate without drilling?

Yes, with a pressure gate such as the Safety 1st auto-close or the pressure-fitted Badabulle Deco Pop, between two walls or in a door frame. It is ideal for rentals, but not for the top of the stairs, where a screw fitting is recommended.

At what age should I use a bed rail?

When your child moves from the cot to a big bed, often between 18 months and 3 years. The product sheet of the Safety 1st portable bed rail gives 18 months to 5 years, for a mattress 10 to 23 cm thick.

Can I exchange my gate if it does not fit my opening?

Yes, purchases can be exchanged within 7 days, as stated on our satisfaction guarantee page. To avoid this, send us your measurements on WhatsApp before ordering.
