You are looking for modern baby girl names, or a boy's name that sounds neither like your grandfather's nor like a fleeting invention. That is the balance many parents in Morocco are after: a short name that sounds lovely in Darija (Moroccan Arabic) and in French, with a clear meaning.
We have gathered 41 modern names whose meaning and Arabic spelling were checked in at least two references. You will not find a "top 2026" here: as far as we know, no official ranking of first names is published in Morocco, and the charts doing the rounds are not based on any public data. The trends mentioned here come from the Moroccan press and from official statistics in other countries, always named.
What counts as a modern name in Morocco?
Above all, it is a name that has replaced those of previous generations. In 2014, psychiatrist and writer Rita El Khayat told La Vie éco that Sofia, Narimane, Fatine, Rayan, Malak and Lina had taken the place of Zoubida, Khnata or Hniya, and that many new names came from Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, even Iran or Turkey, carried by television and the internet.
In 2022, the same magazine listed Ritaj, Tasnime, Alaa and Nassim among names on the rise, as well as Julia, Nadine, Celia or Daria in Western-leaning families. Classic names have not disappeared, though: our selection of Moroccan baby names, from classics to newcomers covers them.

The pitfalls of trendy names
A modern name is not a bad choice. But it comes with a few pitfalls, which are easy to avoid once you know them.
The event name
Some names soar after an event, then fall back. In France, sociologist Baptiste Coulmont, who analyses the Insee first names file, showed that Kylian, given to several hundred babies after the 2018 World Cup, then returned to its medium-term trend. He also observes that, roughly, every year one name enters the "top 20" and another drops out. TV series have the same effect: in 2022, La Vie éco linked Souhaib, Lamiss or Roumayssa to Turkish and Syrian series. Our article on Turkish names and names from TV series looks at this in detail.
The meaning found online
Baby name websites often contradict each other. For example, Chaïma means "marked with a beauty spot" according to Wikipedia, and "of great qualities" according to Wiktionary. In such cases, we would rather leave the name off our lists than give you a doubtful meaning. Always check the meaning in two reliable references before deciding.
Pronunciation and spelling
The sounds ح, ع, خ and غ do not exist in French or English: Hamza turns into "Amza" in French, and Ghaith may end up as "Gaith". And the same name can be spelled in several ways, Hanae or Hana, Ilyas or Elias. Choose one spelling and stick to it everywhere.
"Baby names 2026": what do the numbers really say?
Only countries that publish official statistics let anyone talk about "trending" names with certainty. In Turkey, the TÜİK statistics office ranked Alya, Defne and Gökçe as the top girl names given in 2025, and Alparslan, Göktuğ and Metehan for boys. In France, Baptiste Coulmont notes that the most popular name rarely exceeds 1 to 2% of births: in 2025, Louise accounted for 1.07% of girls.
Migration plays a part too. Back in 2002, Libération observed in Seine-Saint-Denis, near Paris, that Rayan, absent in 1970, made up 8.2% of names among the department's 80 most common Arabic names in 2001. For a name you will rarely hear, see our selection of rare and unique baby names, and for a name that suits either sex, our unisex baby names.
What the Moroccan civil registry checks
A modern or foreign name is not refused for that reason alone. Since law 36-21 on civil status, published in the Official Bulletin on 22 July 2021, the old requirement for a name with a "Moroccan character" has gone. Article 34 rules out a family name, the name of a town, village or tribe, a mocking name, more than two names and any title. Since the 2023 implementing decree, a registrar who hesitates refers the case to the High Commission for Civil Status. The details are in our guide to baby names and the law in Morocco.
Frequently asked questions
What are the trending baby names in Morocco in 2026?
Nobody can say with figures: no official ranking of first names is published in Morocco. The press reports trends. In 2014, psychiatrist Rita El Khayat mentioned Sofia, Narimane, Fatine, Rayan, Malak and Lina; in 2022, La Vie éco noted Ritaj, Tasnime, Alaa and Nassim. The "top 2026" lists circulating online are not based on any public data.
How can I tell whether a modern name will go out of fashion quickly?
You can never be sure, but one sign is reliable: a name that shoots up because of an event often comes down just as fast. In France, sociologist Baptiste Coulmont showed that Kylian, widely given after the 2018 World Cup, then returned to its earlier trend. Choose a name you love for its meaning and its sound.
Can a modern name be refused by the civil registry in Morocco?
A name is not refused because it is modern or foreign: law 36-21 no longer requires a "Moroccan character". It must comply with article 34: no family name, town or tribe, nothing mocking, no more than two names, no title. If in doubt, the registrar records the registration and refers it to the High Commission for Civil Status.
Which modern girl's name is easy to say everywhere?
Choose two syllables without ح, ع, خ or غ, the Arabic sounds missing from French and English. Lina, Aya, Nada, Salma, Rim or Hala sound almost the same in Casablanca, Paris, London or Madrid. Also avoid endings that change with the transliteration, such as Hanae or Hana, if your child is going to live between several countries.
