It is often one of the first things a mother-to-be buys, and one she keeps the longest. In Morocco, people search for it both as a "pregnancy pillow" and a "nursing pillow": in reality it is the same product, used at two different times. Here is how it works, how to choose one and how to use it safely.
What is a nursing pillow for?
During pregnancy: getting comfortable to sleep
From the second trimester, the bump grows and finding a comfortable position at night gets harder. Tucked under the bump and between the knees, the pillow keeps the pelvis aligned when you lie on your side and helps the lower back relax. Many midwives advise sleeping on your side in late pregnancy: ask about it at your check-ups.
While breastfeeding: baby at the right height
WHO recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months. That means many feeds a day, each of which can last a long time. Without support, the mother leans towards her baby and carries the weight in her arms. Wrapped around the waist, the pillow brings baby up to breast height: the back stays straight and the shoulders relax. It is just as useful for bottle-feeding.
Afterwards: a use that continues
Some models have a second life. Candide's Multirelax, for example, turns into a baby lounger from birth to 6 months (3 to 9 kg), thanks to an adjustable harness.
The different pillow shapes
- Long (bolster) pillow: versatile, it wraps around the waist for feeding and goes under the bump and between the knees for sleep. This is the most common shape.
- Very large U-shaped pillow: it surrounds the whole body at night but takes up a lot of space in bed and is less handy for feeds.
- Compact crescent pillow: designed mainly for breastfeeding, it is less practical during pregnancy.
Which filling should you choose?

For breastfeeding, support matters more than softness: a pillow that flattens means adding extra cushions. That is why the Multirelax is filled with microbeads (phthalate-free in the Bunnies version, according to Candide).
How to choose a nursing pillow: 5 criteria
- Versatility: a model you use during pregnancy and after the birth is better value.
- Support: baby must stay stable at breast height without you holding them at arm's length.
- The cover: it must come off and go in the washing machine (spit-up, sweat in summer). Multirelax covers wash at 30 °C.
- Cover fabric: 100% cotton jersey is very soft and stretchy; a polyester-cotton blend is hard-wearing and easy care.

How to use the pillow, step by step
Sleeping while pregnant
Lie on your side, place one end of the pillow under your bump and the other between your knees. Shake the pillow to move the microbeads to where you need support.
Breastfeeding
- Cradle hold: pillow around the waist, opening at the back, baby lying on their side, tummy to tummy.
- Rugby-ball (football) hold: pillow at your side, baby tucked under your arm, feet towards the back. Often preferred after a caesarean, as nothing presses on the tummy.
- Side-lying position: the pillow supports your back or your baby's back.
As a lounger (Multirelax)
Put the pillow on the floor, settle baby in and fasten the harness, then stay beside them.
Safety: the rules to follow
- Never for sleep: the CPSC, the US product safety agency, asks parents not to let infants sleep on nursing pillows or similar products, which are not designed for sleep.
- If baby falls asleep during a feed, lay them on their back in their cot, on a firm mattress with no pillow.
- In lounger mode: always on the floor, always strapped in, always supervised; never on a bed, sofa or table.
